some kind of new "drum layering" software

IF ONLY I could get the demos to play...

They play here, ol pal.  But I'm not sure I get it.  The drum sounds are "interesting" but didn't hear anything with any wow factor.

Plus...(tiny rant)...what's with all this music out now that is quite purposely slightly off the groove.  That drives me absolutely bonkers.  Like the drummer had one too many vials of heroin before showtime.  Like Duke said, "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing".

Now this is interesting.  Most of the demos are very pop-oriented and to me don't sound that great, but the concept of layering samples is well-known and this tool seems to make that very easy.  Apparently there are a bunch of new samples of real drums here that you can combine with each other and with drum-machine samples and mangle them to your heart's content.

One of the things I never liked about NI's drum sets (Abbey Road) is that while they might sound good on their own, they didn't always cut through in a mix without a lot of tweaking.  This tool aims to fix that problem.

Now, if you're primarily looking for natural-sounding acoustic drums, this may not be the best thing.  It's unclear how it handles velocity variations, round-robin, etc.  Would like to hear from anyone who decides to take the plunge!

Cheers,
Eddie

If you have Drumagog, you can essentially do the same thing.
Layer drum samples (or use them to replace the original drums)

I don't get this at all to be honest... Is it a tool to do something that has been possible to do with Battery, Kontakt and pretty much every other sampler that has come out for the past 100 years, without having to learn how to do it the "normal" way or for people to lazy to layer samples themselves? Have NI run out of ideas for new products? Is every production tool out there supposed to do all the thinking for us now? I may be wrong, and I am so often, but this doesn't look revolutionary to me, nor like anything to add to the collective soundscape out there.

LOL - that second sound example really got on my nerves too :p

Yes, NI has so many products that they have started making 'dumb' stuff for the naive.
I was expecting Battery 4 this year and waiting to see if they made the changes I suggested...

I should check the site before commenting, Battery 4 IS out, but looks like minor polishing with new interface

What it says to me is, "Our drum stuff has sold well but we kind of ran out eras for Abbey Road, so can anyone here at NI come up with a new angle for a drum library?".

Personally, I don't have too much interest in it but nothing against the idea either. But who knows, maybe I'll get it in a Komplete upgrade a few years from now and end up liking it. Stranger things have happened.
