Yes, select the clip(s) and change the background via the clip inspector. Any other clips follow the colour settings from either default or those set by the new track colour widget.

Yes and no.
The track inspector has had the background colour widget removed but the clip inspector hasn't. The track inspector wouldn't change the clips either.
X3 is a great upgrade and well worth doing, if only for the comping, assuming you like the X direction of course.*
*IMHO and all other disclaimers I need mention.
PS. The original screenshot I posted is genuine and has not been photo-shopped, changed, resized, touched up, airbrushed, or recoloured in any way.(Does that cover it all? -
