You know the pedal "Bassballs"?  I think it is all over U2's Actung Baby.  Anyway, it gives this super deep bass thing for bass guitar tracks, but I'm not sure what it does.  So my question:  can I replicate that effect from within Sonar?  I have full TH2 and SGear, but that is it for amp sims/effects.

Thanks in advance!

My recollection was that the Bassballs was just a funky filter pedal with a distinct filter sound and some added distortion.

Drew--thats what I think too, but I'm wondering how one might replicate that in Sonar.  I can do the distortion part, but the rest is a mystery.

BEST THING that i know of,

is Waves Maxx Bass.

Did a quick search on the technical details. It has two resonant bandpass filters in parallel with different cutoffs tuned to low and mid/high frequencies controlled by the [EDIT: distorted version of the] signal envelope with a very fast attack and somewhat slower release [EDIT: and allows for the distorted audio signal to be sent through the filters via the "fuzz" switch (otherwise the distorted signal just drives the envelope follower but the clean input signal is filtered)]:

So basically a twin envelope filter pedal. You can try just putting 2 bandpass filters in parallel, cranking the resonance and adjusting the cutoffs. Some Moog plugs and other synths have built in envelope followers and can be used as effects for this kind of thing, but envelope followers can be rather tricky in terms of getting the desired speed and response.

The Bassball's filters are set at 200Hz and 800Hz (well, that's what EHX told me when I asked) which can be tweaked via internal trimpots. It's more of an unstable phasing, warbling kind of effect than a conventional filter though. Quite unlike a Q-Tron/Mutron kind of sound and even less like a conventional Boss style autowah or synth filter, though maybe an analogue 303 clone might get in the same area.

Also has the worst on/off distortion imaginable, unless you like your bass industrial.

I've left the trimpots alone in mine, though the Dr Q is kind of half a Bassballs with the upper filter only and I did have to tweak that for guitar use.

It's one of those effects I've never found a software equivalant for or managed to adequately recreate any other way. If you're after that sound the best and easiest answer is to pick up one of the pedals, they're pretty reasonably priced.

If you do get one, running a compressor right after it is a good idea, the Bassballs filters can throw out 14dB+ spikes.

Try the Cakewalk Modfilter (typically found under DXI effects). I think even the default setting gets you in the bassballpark. Try the Resonant Wah setting and maybe back off the Reso a bit (or crank it!) Automate the Reso[nance] control and you can sure do better than 14db+ spikes (yowch!)

Bifilter2 might work too, although you'll definitely need to automate a control or two. There are some other older Cakewalk-supplied effects worth investigating if you have them around. (Haha, Cakewalk Multivoice Chorus--Rubbery Chorus preset, etc., etc.)

Oh, and by the way:   "I think even the default setting gets you in the bassballpark." Ha!
