Hi,
 Are there any cheap and simple sources for a *count track*. I'm thinking about something that I can use to quickly make a groove clip and then drag it out to use as click track or metronome type reference. If seem like if it was triggered by MIDI that it would follow tempo maps  fairly easily.

 I guess I could make a sample pack for one of my samplers... Is there an option that is easier than that?

Besides the daws metronome you could also use a midi click track to follow tempo.

I just made a custom kit with Battery.
 
I have 1 thru 12 and "and" mapped to the keyboard. I drew up a count in PRV and made a groove clip. We'll see how it works.
 
It seems like it should be scripted to load samples based on a tempo range... so a relaxed count can sound right while a fast count might sound clear at the high rate.
 
 I guess should make a drum map for it.

I'm curious as to why you need a count track (if I understand correctly)?
 
It's actually an intriguing idea, but I'm not sure I can see it as very necessary, at least not for a "normal" time signature. Curious minds want to know.

Nothing complicated; I'm trying to improve my drumming and I am more used to jamming with someone than playing to a click.
 
I'm not really a drummer but I think I am very slowly getting better with practice.
 
My wife plays bass, just for fun with me sometimes, and I started counting out loud for her and I was surprised how much it helped me. I never counted much.
 
I just tried it with my Battery kit and I enjoyed it.

Step Sequencer works for me. I use it for click tracks / metronome as well as personal jam sessions. Run it in loop mode for working up ideas, stretch the groove clip to a specific length for recording your initial guide tracks, or bounce it to MIDI and use it as the basis for a hand-made drum track. Superior Drummer is part of my default project template, so it only takes a few mouse clicks to create a click track.

 I'm not using Battery for the drums sounds. I'm using it because it seemed real easy to load up the samples of my voice saying "one" or "two" etc. and save it all as a "monolithic" .kit
 
 I guess I can do something similar with step sequencer.

This brings back memories of the early days, when I the bass player would get lost and the drummer would follow me him. 
 
Why the drummers would even begin to think that I the bass player would have a better idea than them where the music intersected with the space time continuum is something I will never understand.

Mike an interesting question. For years I used a Boss Dr Synth (DS 330) as a metronome.

Just set your DAW midi click out for channel 10 and use the clave sound C#1 as the click sound. But you can also make up little grooves and things. It is a bit of a waste of a 16 part multitimbral synth for this job but it works very well.
The reason I like it is that Studio One has relentless midi timing ie it is rock solid no matter how hard the audio side of the program is working. You have to be careful sometimes with audio metronomes being generated within a DAW because they may get shifted around a little when things are being pushed but this never happens with midi in Studio One.
