Have fixed the problem I was having with many thanks to Jon from Cakewalk. Very helpful in setting me in the right direction.
 
In Sonar X1 Producer when I was setting up the controller in Controller/Surface Settings the VS-100 was identified in both the input, & ouput ports as it should be... and I was none the wiser.
 
The problem was that "Control (VS-100)"wasn't selected for both...one was "Midi (VS-100)"
 
I missed the part in the Getting Started manual about, Midi Controllers/Surface Settings...Page 27, item #5. (Select "CONTROL (vs-100) For Both the Input Port & Output Port")
 
That's what you get for skimming the manual.
 
Everything now works as it should.....hope this helps someone else who may head down the same path I did.
