Ah, the days when I used my Tascam 424 and some kind of little gadget that put a sync tone on track #4 (that would then bleed through to the other tracks!) so that I could sync it to my (HW) midi sequencer. So if I wanted more than 3 tracks (+ however many virtual midi tracks my synths could muster) I had to do some serious bouncing.

Yes, I don't miss all the bouncing, but definitely some fond memories.

Poor struggling wannabe musicians like myself couldn't afford that stuff. ;)

I couldn't either. :) My parents splurged and bought it for my 17th birthday back in '87. That's the sentimental part I guess.

I remember renting one or having a friend lend one to me for a few days sometimes in the early 90s - that plus a guitar w/ a midi pick-up, a Roland sound module and an Roland amp sim. I think I wrote and recorded 7 or 8 songs in 5 days. That's when I realized that that's what I wanted to do - write and record.

I eventually inherited a big open reel Sony machine which allowed me to record one track on the left, then bounce it on the right while overdubbing, and back on the left, and so. Until it sounded like one big mess... lol

I wrote so much music on that thing, w/ just a guitar, a little Marshall, a Flanger and an Akai XR-10 drum machine  - which I never learned to program: I'd have it play generic beats and hit the fill button or a cymbal button w/ my picking hand live as I recorded the basic rhythm guitar track... :s Man, those were the days.

Yep. As primitive as it was back then, it was still new to us at that time. And trying to overcome the limitations caused some really cool discoveries to happen. I remember before I had the 4 track, I had 2 jamboxes. I would record a part on one of them, play it back and record live to the other one, and so on... and so on... Like you said Rain, it was usually a big mess by the time it was done. But there are some good memories of those times, and I'm sure we're better because of them. :)

Although not panned very well I still do have some decent 3rd-gen-bounced songs on cassettes that I imported into SONAR. Someday when I have all the time in the world I may try to beef up some of them. Might ruin the majik though.

That's cool Bapu! I wish I still had some of mine...

Lead,

I've managed to save every project done on the PortaOne.

I've even got 99% of all my ADAT projects into SONAR too and in most cases I have the MIDI that was sync'd via the BRC using Voyetra Sequence Plus Gold (which I have a running copy of too).

Bapu,
I too had to manage the sync track bleed on adjacent tape tracks.  You brought back memories!  You could not use the track next the sync track due to bleed and you could not put any percussion tracks next to the sync track or it would get out of sync due to crosstalk.

Man, I wish I would have had the foresight to save my stuff. Good thinking Bap. You'll have to share when you get some the way you like it!

I was in heaven when I went to three ADATs and the BRC thru the Alesis X-2 console.

In another post I mentioned I had an 80-8 for a few years in between the Porta One and the ADATs. I have those projects into SONAR too.
