I use Energy XT in Sonar and don't have to use anything in the..uh..."R" ...word...
 
Layering multiple series synths to get killer sounds. This day and age, intelligent selection and sequencing of freeware vsti's can blow the megabux professional gear out of the water.
 
One downside I'm running into though and don't know if there is a quick fix.
 
Say you got 5 string synths in a chain, all balanced and panned, effects in the right place. You are still at the mercy of the ADSR envelope of each synth or sample.
 
Is there an ASDR plug that can be inserted at the end of a chain that can globally control the attack sustain recay and release of a chain. Would be triggered by the audio output of the series.

You can just use a synth that can be configured as FX for this. For instance if you insert z3ta+_fx2 in the effect bin (choose Soft Synths instead of Audio FX in the FX bin of your audio track to insert it), route a midi track to it (to trigger the envelope) and turn off all its oscillators, you can use its ADSR on any audio track (as well as its filters and effects).

Downloading the demo of Xfer. Looks like about $50 but worth it if it will do the task.

Drew, still trying to decipher what you said but looks like good advice for a single instrument. Ran into this with IK's synths. They have a really good layout where you can sequence multiple samples within the same program. Problem was the time to go into each bank and reset the individual envelope if you wanted everything to react the same. No global output control.

The technology has to be complex to get a global hold on each note, if this is even possible with current state of the art. Means taking a chain of several unrelated instruments with variable ADSR parameters and putting some kind of overall control on the collective output.

The idea is that some synths allow you to run them as effects programs, which basically means they have an audio input available for processing external audio. So if you load them into the FX bin on an audio track (or buss) you can use them to process whatever is on that audio track (or buss).

Like you advised, "some" synths. It's the outliers I'm struggling with and trying to get some sort of endpoint control over.

Example here is an absolute killer chain of ancient Mellotron vintage sounds. Can't play a keyboard worth crap, but can design the soundscape with the best of them.

Esoteric chain is Manotron fed into RedTron. Then into MTron Pro, then midi thru into IK's excellent Sampletron. Ambience last stage crafted with Fab's Timeless delay machine.

Can tweak everything but RedTron in the mix. Wanting a gradual attack, but RedTron has no parameters to adjust the attack. Do the subtle curves for the rest but RedTron is still there in my face with a square wave immediate attack.

Hoping Xfer can handle the job. No time to play with it yet.
