I've posted here in years past my experiences on that day. It still seems like it wasn't very long ago. As a New Yorker for almost 25 years now, it still brings on strong emotions that can seem raw. Next week, I'll be spending 4 days in Manhattan. It'll be my first visit to the site since the Memorial was finished. In my past visits there, looking at the enormous holes where the towers stood, I still found myself feeling a rage against those responsible. Angry that they made me feel so helpless and afraid immediately after the attack.

Now that OBL is dead, and the Memorial site can be experienced, I'm hopeful those feelings will be replaced with something else.

I was working at a lady's house installing some new lights in her bathroom. She had her bedroom TV on and I really wasn't paying much attention until the announcer's words about a plane hitting the World Trade Center Tower caught my attention. I popped my head out the door to see the first tower with smoke coming out.

Since I knew the lady, I called her name and together we stood dumbfounded watching the screen.  The camera was live on the towers, and as we watched, the second plane hit the second tower.  I said, "this is no accident. we are under attack by terrorists".

We discussed the possibilities of what we had just seen for a few minutes, and I went back to work to finish the work I had started.  I think I headed home after that job was finished. It was a beautiful sunny day here in NC but for some reason, it didn't feel so sunny the rest of the day.

It seems that America lost it's innocence that day in some aspect. The reality that people really did hate us just for being alive became real to many folks.

The saddest part of this all to me is that some in this country have not yet learned the lesson of that day and continue on with heads buried in the proverbial sand. How ironic is it that we are now arming and supporting the very same group that did this to our countrymen and women?
