  • Can't use Cakewalk FX Plugins with Windows 7 64-bit

For years I've used the original Cakewalk Music Creator's FX Stereo Reverb plugin in my songs, from ACID 3.0 to 6.0, on Windows XP 32-bit. Now, I'm wanting to move everything over to my new Windows 7 64-bit PC, and that reverb plugin will not open in any song. I have so many songs where that plugin has been used and tuned very finely for each separate track, so I can't part with it. Could anyone please offer some advice on how I could make it work in Windows 7? I am rather desperate for a solution.

Welcome to the forum.
It's probably a DX effect and won't work on a 64-bit OS.

Thanks. And I really hope that's not true...

yup... probably is.

Plugs, I believe need to be compatible with the bit rate in the OS.  32 to 32..... 64 to 64.

That's definitely a bummer...looks like I'll just have to keep the two partition setup I've got going now. I've got maybe 300 songs that use that plugin, so I don't really have any other option.

you can always update the plugs to 64 bit.

most companies have the 64 bit upgrades available now. I would think the update would or should be a free update to registered users.

this is the reason I decided a few years ago, when I built my new DAW, to stay 32 bit all the way. I know I am limited now by some of the new things only being in 64 bit but that was a decision I made...... and as long as this system runs, it is all I need.

But will my songs automatically pick up on the 64-bit plugins? Or would I have to tweak everything all over again?

If they are DX's FX then you'd have reinsert them as the 64bit version (they are not the same "app").

if they are VST's they should work on the 64bit OS using the bitbridge IF you have an MC version that has bitbridge.  I think that came out with MC5.  I don't see where you said which version of MC you have.

if you don't have MC5 or 6, and the FX you're talking about are VST's then buying MC6 should allow them to open in MC6 and work using the bitbridge.

effects have come so far in years that the reverb effect you are talking about is outdated, not that it wasnt a good plug in for its time, but things get better..much better.
open up to new technology, why would you need that plug in for 300 songs.
unless your still mastering those 300 songs.
make your backups and install a single boot, start fresh.
the samething happen to me when i went from pro audio 9,i was very weary and reluctent to install windows 7 from windows xp.
but serious, what was i going to do,let technology pass me by and fall behind over a couple plug ins?

reap the benefits of the future, youll be happy you did.

best wishes

Chuckebaby, I appreciate the advice, and one of the reasons I'm trying to get everything onto Windows 7 64 is to play with some new tools, but I would like to make sure I can't solve this issue before thinking about reprogramming hundreds of songs. Most are unfinished, and the ones I have finished and released I still would like to retain their original sound so I can render out individual instruments if needed. It may be an old plugin, but I knew how to use it and make it sound great. Beagle, I have the very first MC. I started using the reverb FX in ACID way back and just kept adding it to songs. I do think they are VSTs...so there's hope then?
