Folks have been asking for enhancements to SPAN for years, but Aleksey has understandably been reluctant to spend too much time on a freebie. So he did the logical thing: add in those enhancements and charge money for the fancied-up version. Forty bucks for the next two weeks, then fifty.

Looks like the main wishlist item has been granted: multiple spectral overlays, like GlissEQ does.

As big a fan of SPAN as I am, and as nice as SPAN Pro looks, I'll probably pass on it anyway. Forty bucks is forty bucks, and anyway I'm saving up for SampleTank4 :) The old SPAN does pretty much everything I need, and I can do the spectral overlays with other tools.

Hahaha! The Sampletank jokes alone are worth $40. Do you take paypal?

I think I would wait - I've heard on the grapevine Bit is developing an app for the ipad  - iJoke. He's just honing the Samptank section as we speak

The Maillard Reaction

Does anyone have a list of what it does that the free one doesn't?

I see some things, but not much.

Span Plus looks great, but I have to ask, does it provide a better service than the analyser that comes with Fabfilter Pro-Q? I suppose it would allow me to simply analyse a signal without adding an effect as such, but I could still do the same with Pro-Q.

Just wondering really...

I often use SPAN in conjunction with Pro-Q and Pro-L. Even though Pro-Q has a nice spectrum display and Pro-L has the metering, SPAN has the Mastering Mode, configurable ballistics and larger, easier-to-read meters. SPAN Pro adds a resizable UI, which, next to spectral overlays, is probably it's best feature.

I do have a great idea for an iPad app: the iGuitar. Six virtual strings and a virtual fretboard. It'll be sure to replace those big, bulky, not-so-portable actual guitars.

You'll have to learn how to play on a 6" virtual neck, of course, and do so without any tactile feedback, but by now you should already be accustomed to typing with the edge of your finger with your hand curled up like an arthritis sufferer. If this sounds like it might be awkward to play, have no fear: it features one-finger riffs and complete song loops so you can sound exactly like your favorite guitar heroes even if you have zero talent.
