Incidentally, I got so fed up with the standard 18-55mm f3.5~5.6 zoom being so slow that I (took your recent advice re: the relative difference between sensor size and focal length and...) bought a couple of fixed focal length Canons to use when I want that extra bit of quality, and when the light ain't so good. I really don't like straying off 100ISO to compensate, and I don't always have my tripod with me. I got the 'basic' 35mm f2 which makes a great standard lens; and the good old nifty-fifty 50mm f1.8, which makes for an excellent portrait lens with that aperture.
 
I've definitely got my eye on the new EOS 6D for my next body. It seems pretty reasonable value for a full frame.

Yes Steve we have a 5d and a 5dmkII that we really enjoy.
 
I have a 24-70 f2.8L that is nice and a 70-200 f2.8L that is very nice but now that we have the zooms covered I want to get back to enjoying primes for their lightness, brightness, convenience, and over all quality.
 
I intended to buy the 50mm 1.2L but went with the 35mm as it seems to be a great lens by any standards. The 50mm 1.2L seems to be equaled by the 50mm 1.8 once you are above 2.8 and so the 1.8 seems to be a FANTASTIC value for a very good lens.
 
I wasn't so much interested in the wide open aperture but now that I have it I'll exploit it.
 
I never had such nice lenses when I was young and hungry... so now it's just a real treat to have them and have such easy access to image processing.
 
My big problem is that I want the 800mm and I realize that you should buy it when you are 21 because you'll want to use it every second you have on the planet to justify it's astronomical cost. It seems a pity that I'll probably not have one until I'm near the end. :-S. If that makes sense.
 
Luckily I am happy driving my old car and I am a cheap skate in many ways... so maybe just maybe I'll snap and do it before it is too late.
 
In the mean time I think the prime 35 will increase the fun factor of carrying a camera around to places where nice photos may be made.

Nice photo.  Back in my 35mm, I had a 35mm, 1.4 and a 100mm, I think that was 1.4 as well.  I never used a "normal" 50mm lens or a zoom.  Would have liked a tele, though.  Everything was Minolta.  I've been putting off buying a DSLR because I want the full-frame models that I can't afford at the moment.  Canon will probably be my first choice.  

I equate the cost of the camera body to the cost of fil;m and processing.
 
When I was an aspiring photog I could barely afford film or processing... the cost of my digital bodies was a sudden upfront payment but the accrued savings in film and processing has eclipsed the cost of the body.

I agree.  It's so much cheaper and easier to learn photography in the digital realm than it was with film.  Even with a dark room, it took such a long time to get results that I'd forgotten what I'd done to get the original image.  The immediate feedback of digital also enhances the learning process, but there is also something to be said for learning and having control of each step in the photographic process.  The lessons learned really stayed with me and still give me a good base for my less serious digital shots now.
