I remember when the real 909 first came out - IIRC, back then it was nearly a thousand dollars!
I didn't like the sound of it back then, either.
I had the little brother, the TR505, in fact I still have it in the loft somewhere. It fell into disuse when I got a an Alisis HR16, which beat the Roland stuff hands down in my opinion, but I was after more "real" sounding drums.
No GAS for me on this one. In the unlikely event I want a 808 or 909 sound they seem to be everywhere, I would probably go to Toontracks No1 hits. To this day I still do not know why I bought that one! (Don't get me wrong, It's good at what it does, its not my sound)
But I respect Fog's opinion that for certain types of music this D16 product would be useful.
d16's effects are excellent.
