Has anyone tried the demo of the OverTone DSP FC70 Vintage Fairchild Compressor / Limiter? I'm usually very impressed with their offerings but when I tried this, I was expecting something different. I probably don't know how to use it properly. Anyone out there have any tips on how to use this type of compressor, on what instruments, channel or buss?

The Fairchild is probably used most frequently on Vocals...but can be used
in many applications...

At $25 I don't know how it would compare to the Waves PuigChild or the IK Vintage 670...

Thanks dlesaux for posting this ... I hadn't heard about this until now.  Given that OverTone's Pultec emu is one of my very favorite plugins, I had to download the demo of the FC70 immediately.

So far, I'm liking this one a lot.  Compared to similar plugins from other vendors, it seems more 3-dimensional and real-sounding.  We're talking subtle differences, but to my ears the others sound flat and grainy in comparison.  As with any new tool, I'll have to live with this one for a while to make sure I'm not imagining what I think I'm hearing.  :-)

Anyway, don't let the no-brainer prices for the OverTone plugins throw you ... they are the real deal.  Oh, and there's an excellent manual for the FC70 that explains how it's used, for anyone unfamiliar with the Fairchild compressor.

Cheers,
Eddie

I'd recommend jumping on it for $25. I'd do so myself but I already have IKM's 670 emulation.

This compressor was originally designed for vinyl disk cutting, so it's very fast. You can basically use it anywhere you'd use an 1176. It was a standard weapon at Abbey Road during the Beatles' tenure, and they used it on pretty much everything. Listen to the early Beatles ultra-compressed drum overheads. That's the 670.

Don't expect it to be your go-to compressor for everything, though. It's just for brute-force smashing. But useful to have in your toolkit.

You can use the Fairchild 670 on most anything (vocals, bg vocals, guitars, bass, drums, piano, etc), but many times it is used as a bus compressor, on a mix bus or in a mastering role. The hardware version was a beast that had like 20 tubes and various transformers in it. You can checkout some of these videos to get you headed in the right direction.

Youtube videos typically default to 360p, you may want to bump up to at least 720pHD and listen on good quality headphones or monitoring system.

Hey Billy! Just watched the videos and now I get it! And as a result, I also got it (the OverTone FC70 VST that is!)! Sounds great on the master buss just before the SSL compressor. Adds a lot of punch to the mix! Thanks again for the video links and tips! You've been all very helpful!

You may want to hear for yourself how different these two emulations sound ... you may be surprised!
