The Maillard Reaction

Yesterday I played some drums and did a rough mix to a friends piano song.

This morning I listened with fresh ears and realized the drummer liked it when he was really hot in the mix?

I also played the bass part yesterday.

This morning the bass player decided to turn down the drums and turn up the bass and piano.

Why is that?

Hi,

Hahaha!

Love that ...

You know, for my writing, if there is one thing I don't like, it is "second guessing" your particular feeling in that moment in time ... nothing hurts your perception more than that, when you need to improve that perception ... of course, it is going to be different later ... you already know that!

But too many people have this idea that things are better when you tinker with them ... and that is NOT necessarily true!

So, next time try this for size ... do something without making those changes, and when you are done, evaluate the whole thing ... no changes until "you are done" ... and then go ahead and make the adjustments that you feel you need!

It's a process issue ... I think musicians are too damn critical about the "process" ... to allow themselves a chance to create something ... you don't even allow it to grow "on its own" ... as I usually say!

Any change ... is almost always about the different day, time, and place ... and is NEVER the same thing as that original moment for me ... in WRITING. No reason for it to be different for you in music!

Wait until the entire band walks in wearing "More of ME in the mix!" t-shirts...

It means a good mix engineer has to be very impartial and not be influenced by what any band member says or if they have played any of the parts themselves either. It takes a lot of experience to just put all that aside and get the correct balance. You just don't have enough of that experience yet Mike.

I'm thinking maybe I should start hanging out at Pensado's Place till I figure out what I'm doing.

I should sell those to every studio in town and the engineers could pass them out whenever someone says.. "More of ME in the mix!".

Can you print up a batch of "I'm with stupid" T Shirts that I can hand out to visitors when I ask them to gather together for our commemorative photo?
