I'm in the same boat. Got Melodyne Editor 2 recently, find it easy to use and get fantastic results relatively quickly. Now I understand why this is so "essential", especially in paid work ...
Yet, a crappy performance remains a crappy performance; some things are just beyond fixing. I had to release that again just yesterday
So I keep me eyes open for the release of Melodyne Virtual Vocalist

or something with a talent knob and downloadable voice impulse files ...
