I'm still on K7, so it's really not a bad deal for me ($149) after skipping K8. 

And the K7 -> K9 -> K9_Ultimate upgrade path is the exact same price as just doing K7 -> K9_Ultimate directly, so there's no need to worry about losing out on something I might not want and can't really afford right now.


American Express's fraud protection apparently doesn't think much of the payment company NI uses though, as they kontakted me shortly after I ordered to make sure the order was OK.

Apparently it's all about electronic and not acoustic drums.  Epic fail for me.

Battery is about way more than electronic drums. It's about whatever drums you want. You can drag samples from anywhere into the cells and make a kit. As an all purpose drum machine it's great. You could make thousands of kits from the free samples you have installed from Cakewalk. And there are many acoustic kits that come with Battery - you can also mix and match all of the samples in all of the kits to make new kits. 


The only thing lacking in Battery IMO is some kind of sequencer. I'm kind of interested in something like Geist for that. 

I have Battery 4 I just don't want a bunch of electronic sounds.  I want acoustic sounds and they don't seem to have added any.

I am still on K7 as well.  I got GR5 as a bonus for having bought the Komplete Audio 6.  


It's $99 to upgrade Kontakt 5, $149 to upgrade K7->K9.  If there were anything else in the bundle I knew I wanted, I might be more excited.  I know that there's a lot of stuff I would be getting for the extra $50, and some things I would probably get a lot of use from, but I would have expected more that I could get excited from in a two version upgrade.

For $149 the signal processing may be worth it. Looks like they've been detached from GR5 in K9. I really like the quality of those plugs and will use them lots more as standalone apps.

Yes.

I don't know how easy it is to import your own samples in to battery but when ever I hear people on here listing that as a requirement battery seems to be the only one that gets mentioned.
Can Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer, Session Drummer do this too?

I'm asking as I recently discovered this video on how to import your own samples in to BFD2 and was impressed with it's simplicity.
Probably not something I'll be doing as I have about 300GB of drum expansions but just thought it was interesting.

Maybe battery offers much more but I can't think of much more that you'd need ?

Battery is a very nice sampler. Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer etc can't import it's own samples but are great for tweaking the sounds in the sound packs and treat them like "normal" drum tracks. Session Drummer and BFD can import samples but are limited in tweakabillity compared to Battery.

Battery is a different beast, well tailored for not just playback of samples, but also sound design of percussive sounds. It can also import loops and rex-files, map them out over the pads with great playabillity. Think of Battery as a relative to Kontakt while Supperior Drummer, BFD and such is are closely related to a real drum kit

I use Superior Drummer for accoustic sounds, which it does great! And for everything else I use Battery. I work a lot with sampled sounding and electronic drum sounds. I throw random accoustic drum sounds into it when I need something that SD doesn't provide. And for electronic drums, sound effects (one shots) and some serious percussive sound design, Battery is perfect for me. Battery 3 is a little long in the tooth. There are a few things that doesn't make sense anymore so I am very excited about Battery 4.

As a keyboard player I certainly find mapping the sounds to keys in Kontakt more logical than the drum machine pad layout of battery.

 I find that the Battery's ability to hit any pad (edrums)  or key (keyboard) and instantly learn/map that note is huge.  I can EASILY set up a kit with any sound on any drum to play in real time.  Kontakt can not do that as EASILY or QUICKLY - you have to go into all those messy edit pages.   This is huge for e-drums but even on a keyboard if I want to play a percussion kit make from tablas, congas, marching bass drum and kitchen sink I can in seconds have a kit assigning to adjacent keys in a convenient real-time playing order.  Also the visual of having all the sounds laid out in front of me with NAMES on each pad is great.  I actually hate using Kontakt for drums and never use my NI Abby Road stuff for that reason.
