I take serious exception to that.

I am a child of the 80s, after all.

I absolutely hate Led Zeppelin.

Oh yeah????  Well I don't like Dylan!  So there!

Nyah-Nyah-Nyah-Nyah-NYAH!

but you, however, Jules, are my favorite!!!
You're a GOOD BOY, Beagle!  :)

craigb In the middle of a concert in Ireland, U2 stopped playing and Bono began clapping his hands, slowly, rhythmically as the crowd grows quiet... "Everytime I clap my hands, a child dies in Africa" Bono proclaims. After a brief silence, a voice from the crowd yells "Then stop fooking doing it!!!"

I just spit coffee all over my laptop laughing at that!

+100, that is funny.
Stuff like that is why I would never go to see someone like Mellencamp. The last thing I want to hear when I have paid money to be entertained and maybe get away from it all for a bit is some idiotic political ranting... I would probably get kicked out of the show, or beaten senseless.. (that wouldn't take much, laff). Bono, Mellencamp, and others like that could hand out fliers or something. Maybe I would take it home and read it instead of getting pi55ed off and then tuning them out. Stop clapping then ... now that is funny, not pootically correct at all but most really funny stuff is totally insensitive.

That reminds me of the late great Brother Dave Gardner's line, "when a man falls down, KICK HIM.. it may make him want to get back up!"

I was very impressed with U2 at Glastonbury (saw it on the TV, I have enough mud in my life thanks), really powerful performances, great sound too. Anyone harping on about limited guitar playing is missing the point IMO - it all serves the song, and they don't sell millions of copies of those songs by accident.

As far as Rush goes, I'm a moderate fan, but I probably disgust die-hard fans, because my favourite period is around Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. 'Time Stand Still' and 'Mission' are overlooked masterpieces, and as the years go on, I find myself identifying with the lyrics more and more.

I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long...
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...tonight...

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday...

I like "Rush"

"All the Worlds a Stage" is a definite classic live release..............

Led Zepplin..............."Song Remains the Same".. is complete torture to my senses...............

There's really no one discussed here that I don't like. Each of the bands have something special going on. It's true that Jimmy Page was not his best in a live venue. It's the creativity and ideas for composition that make me humble.

When I got the proper tuning for Rain Song (DGCGCD) it all came together and I thought that it was not that hard to replicate much of it. But then I thought "how did he get this idea and this tuning?". Humbling indeed.

I've seen a lot of bad Jimmy page performances... and I've seen some that are jaw dropping over the top great.

The thing is, he was usually doing the work of two guitarists and a keyboard player.

The guy just plain worked harder than just about anyone you might nominate for comparison.

best regards,
mike

I remember hearing the odd U2 song on the radio (John Peel) when they were just starting to get a name for themselves.

At the time, I saw them as the logical successors to Stiff Little Fingers (a band from Northern Ireland whose lyrics and subject matter were drawn from the ongoing troubles in Ulster).

I still think some of their early stuff is wonderful, and the Live At Red Rocks video is still very powerful even today.

Songs from that era are timeless to me - New Years Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday (as Mike mentions) and the truly marvellous 40 - they all still sound great.

How long to sing this song?

'Bout 30 years eh Bonio

The Maillard Reaction
About a year before I moved to Tallahassee U2 played a small room here.

When I got here people were still talking about it. Heck some of my friends are still talking about it. Heck... I'm talking about t.

The room was a local practice spot that was shared by a few alt-punk bands. I had some good times there.

The room was heated by burning a fire in the 55 gallon drum in the middle... but that wasn't problem because the floor was dirt and the roof had plenty of leaks.

It was good practice because back then some of the clubs weren't much fancier.

The U2 guys rolled into town played some music and spent the night talking with the locals in that setting.

I don't begrudge them any of their success... those guys took their message out and shared it with the world.

I made up for that and another near miss at seeing them. I got to see them 4 times when they got big enough to play rooms with concrete floors. I guess I saw them in a grass field once too.

:-)

Good times.

this is the only U2 song I like a lot because I still have not found what I was looking for either...
