It's IK Multimedia's SampleTank FREE, which has been around for a while but now has no restrictions - it's fully functional, just with a smaller sample library than the $200 product. I picked up Sampletank for fifty bucks in the recent group buy and it's turned out to be surprisingly useful.

+1 on SampleTank
I also got in on that group buy (2x) and found it very useful as well.....my problem is trying to find the right instrument when sorting through that huge library....I guess it's better to have more than less. Will probably start making my own preset folder & keep the favorites there. But, I find myself going to ST on a regular basis.

agreed on both fronts. The Free is good and the Group Buy was even better!

Thanks Dave for a great recommendation. I have only used Sample Tank a few times and that was a while ago. I like the sound of it and I find it is easy to edit the patches very easily. The effects are fun too and quite versatile. You are right, the bundled free library is very useful in many areas.

Glennb for a while there I had no sound but found the track had been muted or it was muted so therefore making no sound. Check that. The graphics are not that clear.  How did you go with the String Studio plugin.

I think I am going to get a reputation....

I have SampleTank up and running with the exception that if I insert it in Sonar, i get a message that I am not running it with Administrator Privileges (I have changed the preferences for the program to run as admin). If I open it as standalone it is fine but asks me to register it which I need a serial no. for and I cant find the serial no.  Seems a pretty good bit of gear though and I have found many usable sounds already.

The studio String plug in is working perfectly. AAS finally worked out that they had left the .au off the end of my email and all fixed after that. Took a while though but they were persistent whilst helping me. I really like that bit of gear. When I got it I was hoping for lush string swells and backing. To me its not really that but some of the other sounds that I gives are fantastic and a really nice surprise.

SampleTank is an aging product that was developed in pre-Vista days when applications freely wrote to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, top-level folders and the Program Files tree. Starting with Vista, Microsoft doesn't want you to do those things anymore for security reasons. Consequently, some older software needs to run with Admin privileges to function properly. You may find that you only have to run it as Administrator the first time and then it's OK. I do not run ST as Admin and have no problems.

Here is the patch list. Note that the library includes stuff from all the ST-based products, including SonicSynth, SampleTron and Miroslav Philharmonik.

Another note: if you already have the full ST 2.5, you don't need this free version as it contains nothing you don't already have.
