Well, I make some good beer.... but recently I saw a recipe for some home made apple pie moon shine. I figured, hey... that sounds like fun.... maybe even delicious. Yeah they even used that word in the instructions..... So I got all the ingredients and followed the instructions.

It's been 4 weeks today. The recipe suggested letting it set for about 3 weeks in a cool, dark place...... to "age".  I sneaked a taste last week and one today..... hooooo boyyyy... not sure this worked like it was supposed to. But the final test is to "pour it over ice" since I know whiskey tastes smoother and better when chilled...... so I will try this probably tonight and let you know..... but right now.... oh my....

The Maillard Reaction

There is a recent book known as Botany of Desire that describes how a guy named "Johnny Appleseed" became famous in the Ohio River valley for propagating and selling Apple seedlings. The book describes how a wide spread enthusiasm for hard cider caused millions of apple trees to be planted.

It's a great piece of American history. :-)

Hope you enjoy yourself.

best regards,
mike

Is it a hard cider or will you have to distill it?

It's not actually distilled shine (that would be of interest to the revenuer's in this state, aka Alcohol, tobacco and firearms.... ) ...... it's a recipe with apple juice, white & brown sugar, apple cider vinegar,  ever-clear (151 proof), and cinnamon sticks....nothing more than a mixed drink that sets for a while before you consume it.

At room temp the ACV is pretty evident.... supposedly, with ice, that changes....and I would certainly hope so.

On another note.... I do brew my own beer, and I have the ingredients to make some hard cider.....I will probably brew that later in the year as the weather starts to cool off again.

Do you know Tickle?

I'v thought about making small batches of hooch. There are flks online who sell some nice looking post with thumpers. Here is one: http://www.milehidistilling.com/electric-1500-watt-8-gallon-traditional-pot-still-with-thumper/
Our local winemaking store told me that it is really easy to convert equipment he has in stock. Heck, George Washington made shine, we shoud have the right to make a few gallons for personal use. Maybe the law will change.
I've had apple pie made from Everclear... it was good but really sweet. I hope you enjoy yours!!
