Its doomed.  It has become so polluted by evil industry, evil government, and the greed of man.  There is mercury in the food supply, and cesium in the air.  Its awash in violence, and lust.

Leave!!  Get a on a spaceship and travel far away into another galaxy.  The planet is dying.

And what makes you think that we won't take the pollution, evil government, greed and violence with us

Well...the simple fact is that, obviously, Homo sapiens can not multiply limitlessly. At some point a crash has to take place, just like in any overgrown animal population. But human life on earth will continue 'till the sun goes off. The more of us there are  here, the dirtier the struggle of existance will get. An immensely wealthy minority of about 10% of the population will propably create a world of their own, and the rest of us remain as replacable working ants with little value. Possibly...

On the other hand, during the past 20-25 years the world has changed as (or even more) dramatically than during the previous big change, industrialisation, so it wouldn't be a surprise if something radical would occur, which would slow down the growth of the gap between the wealthy and the masses.

Why not just let the evil government types, the greedy and the violent leave instead?

On a more brain-related side, what you think about most and expect you tend to see more and more of.  I've started focusing a lot more on positive things and not listening to the negative.  Things have definitely improved and there's plenty of examples of good out there.

That's if we manage to survive the 50-odd dinosaur extinction sized meteorite impacts that we can expect to happen during that time Kalle.

Or an unmanageable viral or bacterial epidemic.

Having said that, and in line with LP's OP, I believe the most likely cause of human extinction will be something we actually cause ourselves.

There is in existence a respected group who believe that the human race will self extinguish within the next one hundred and fifty years.

Examining the earth's history and as our esteemed Strummy observed there have been a number of extinction events in the past.  Not so much a case of if just a case of when.

Depression is just so much fun

If it wasn't for the government and leadership types with all their scheming and double dealing...this planet would be a pretty peaceful place I do believe. Most people just want to live in peace, enjoy family and friends, and die naturally in old age.
