I must say I'm pretty much off the idea of buying any Waves plugins after reading this thread.
I will rebuy my mercury any day specially at actuall prices ....the quality and quantity and variety of tools you have for the price of 10 199$ plugins is just crazy ...

Also (hope it will continue) , i had zero issues with licences !!! for real ....local or usb stick ...

I'm pretty sure it's due to some specific system configuration maybe ....also their support is pro level ....the wup update sucks but is still ok ...

Unless you boyocott israelis product (for political convictions) i don't see anything to not going waves ....(exept also if you don't like the sound !!) ;)

Zo, as a fan of Waves who has and uses everything they sell, what would you consider to be an example of a Waves plugin that has no viable alternative?

I know RenBass / MaxxBass are frequently cited. But what about bread 'n butter effects such as compressors, gates, limiters, equalizers, reverbs and delays? Surely there are many quality alternatives within those categories.

And isn't there a lot of redundancy in the Mercury bundle? All those one-knob and two-knob dumbed-down plugins with famous engineers' names attached seem like an attempt to repackage the same things over and over.

(And no, I do not boycott Israeli companies for political reasons.  I don't even boycott companies based in Massachusetts, despite their attempt to unload their governor on us.)

Im not Zo...but I used to be a WAVES poo pooer (he he... I said poo poo) until I got a few of the more esoteric plugs (TransX, Audio Track, Aphex, HLS channel, etc...) and then the CLA and JJP sig series.  The waves stuff may be like the emperors clothing but to me they have a larger "aural signature" than other plugs.  Sort of like my Nomad Factory stuff.  You turn knobs and stuff happens.  Good stuff.  They seem very tweakable and very useful.  And, more importantly, they sound good.  I also, like Bit, thought at first that the Signature series stuff was sort of a solution in search of a problem...till I used them.  While I could live without my Kramer or Maserati they'd have to pry my CLA and JJP out of my cold dead hands.  They are just too easy and too good.  Of course, in my line of work I have to get good mixes up quickly and out the door.  And they certainly help me do that.  On my own stuff that has no time table I'll try almost everything and tweak till the cows come home.  Just my 2 cents re WAVES.

PS: As I've said before...a feller could do a lot worse than just buy a decent reverb and then everything FabFilter sells and just be done with that.

Interesting mentioning the Nomad stuff,

I have the  Nomad bundle (I dont remember what it was called, but a whole slew of compressors, Eqs, fx, ..) and was thinking about going into the hole and purchasing Mercury whilst it is on sale...

Old Pal. whats your opinion with regards to the "typical" Waves Comp/Eq vs a Nomad similiar one?

Lol , well first to cite the poopoo post of Pal ;) i never been a waves lover for real ...but simple thing like the S1 imager, Xnoise , Doubler, Hdelay,Paz analyser, metal flanger, transX (transient designer style), L3/16 ect ........are stuff that are  not heavily used but life saver so many time ...i own all softubes and even if you own all uad or waht ever brand , the only brands that provide ALL a PRO mix need is waves .....(maybe Mc DSP but don't know all their line)  ...to get the equivalent you will have to get X rands equivalent and will end up with way more ....and not speacially better ...

Of course you have stuff in Mercury you don't use (one knob , artists series for my part ..C1, ect ..) but at the end it's still the best deal around specially when 300 $ a year you have all new plugins ....

I dislike Waves so much I'm probably upgrading to Platinum...
(while it's on sale)  I can only inch my way to Mercury...

These are the types of effects that drew me to Waves in the first place: the rarely-used specialty processors that have no equivalent.

The only two Waves plugins I own are both on your list (TransX and Doubler). The others you listed, I think I could duplicate them all with non-Waves plugins. This is reassuring, given my determination to avoid Waves in the future, so thanks for that, Zo.

This all sounds too easy zo, like the difference between using a dishwasher or cleaning the dishes manually. But if I had money and the certainty that everything would work when I needed it to work, I might one day be surfing on the waves, too.
