Just watched the series you done a while ago on Studio One (sorry to mention the other platform on here)
Very informative I did not realise that you had presented it until I saw your guitar in the air.

How ever I have done a song and put it on you tube. (granted the song may not be to your liking) but I just wanted some good advice. I am trying to make my songs sound more lively brighter bassier warmer rather than cold and tin sounding.

I have not had much experience here but...if you listen to the song im sure your experience can tell what I would need to do to get it sounding thicker brighter fuller.

For me this is trial and error but in an untreated room...not the best but I think that I have a pretty good ear but also understand that you can get ear fatigue.

No advice on how to get my recordings sounding less thin? In fact I was reading some tips over at gear slutz but that was advice for Pro Tools users and not sure if the whole starting of at -6db or lower. Is this the common practice with Sonar users?

In the digital domain, there is much less concern for signal to noise (like there was in the days of analog tape.)  You don't need to record at levels above -6db and really if you are in the -12 to -24 db range you are fine.

Regarding your track.  First let me say I am no expert, but here is what I hear:
A lot of bass and a lot of higher frequencies.  There is no mid range until later in the track when you bring in what sounds like an acoustic guitar (and even then its not a lot).  There is probably too much bass which could be a result of your studio monitors or your listening environment (or likely both.)  Find some way to add some mid range frequencies (500-2K) and roll off some of the low end < 60Hz approximately.  You may need to add some instrumentation (a pad possibly) to get that mid range.  Also you need to apply some EQ to the drums to take some of the harshness out of them (around 10K).

If you have the new Sonar, use the Mix recall feature to try different mixes.

You might change the thread title to generate more interest in critiquing your mix.  You might also try the song forum.
