...and did "dad" give him any chew toys????  dogs are gonna chew!  if you give them something specific chew on, they're less likely to chew what you don't want them chewing on (shoes, etc).  and reinforce good behavior (chewing on the chew toy) with reward.

It is a little sick when people think the dog is their child and would call you "Dad or Mommy"... sick.... My dog, I believe, knows I'm not her Dad, She looks at me and thinks things like "Food" and "walk".
