Why is the Toon stuff always so "busy"?
I realize that for this genre (Metal) its the "right" thing, but it seems ALL their stuff is over the top.
Why not some Charlie Watts midi or Ringo midi?
I know I'm dating myself, but some "solid" time keeping would go a long way.

Off course I'm all over anything "Fat Bottomed", cause after all; Fat Bottomed Girls do make the world go 'round.

I'm only into the more sedate stuff too. I don't know how people write their own metal midi either. 3 billion beats a minute and it's all over the shop. I marvel at their brain power to bring it all together. I suspect they are blind drunk as they compose but in the morning, it all sounds great.

Just listened to the demos on this  - as Tom says - TOO Busy and not one I shall be getting. One of the best midi libraries I have is the Steve Ferrone one from Platinum Samples - Superbly played and just fits and it most certainly is not over the top like this one from Toontrack.

You have to remember that for the Toontrack guys, metal means Meshuggah and similar bands. 

While I can appreciate part of what they do, Meshuggah often seem to be more preoccupied w/ making every new measure more technically complex and odd than the previous one than w/ writing an actual song. I don't get how kids can even bang their heads to that stuff.

I thought I could absorb pretty much every styles, I liked "progressive metal" bands like Opeth and such. But I guess I had lost contact w/ the metal scene, and I finally end up w/ the old man who just doesn't get it anymore hat on my head. That new generation of brutal metal is way beyond me.

The odd things is that I find myself writing more and more metal oriented type of music for my wife, but Toontrack's metal libraries are almost useless because they don't blend in w/ anything.

BTW, looking to beef up my existing library for the current bunch of songs, I've just bought Bobby Jarzombek's metal grooves library from Platinum Samples. 

A bit more expensive than your average Toontrack library, especially w/ current the Audio Deluxe sale, but as w/ the rest of the Platinum Samples stuff, the quality is there, and the material won't require heavy editing to be usable. They're actual grooves, not fricking drum solos.

After browsing through all of the TT libraries, it became obvious that only a tiny part of it could be of any use to me and that I'd have to spend a lot of time editing.

Plus, knowing that Rail from PS will go out of his way to assist you when you need it is a huge plus.

PS seem to have quite a couple of nice usable libraries.

I'm actually working on a collection of tunes in this style and this will be perfect! I've never written tunes in this style before but it's actually a lot of fun! I'll be getting this for sure!

I forgot how to quote right now, but Tom feels exactly how I do. Toontrack really needs to be realistic with these drum midis.
I like meat and potatoes drummers and the Steve Ferrone pack is just that....great!
 
I'm not really into metal but there are some excellent drummers out there who know how to play to a song......Toontrack should be looking at players like Lars Ulrich and the guy from the Foo Fighters, geez Dave Grohl is an excellent drummer in his own right......

Well, I guess those guys they employ are "technically" more impressive. That fellow named Dirk (?) is a machine. But who wants to play against a drum solo? It's like trying to sing over Yngwie while he's shredding...


One thing you'll notice if you listen to those bands is that the drums seem to have a different role than the traditional beat keeping. Almost as if they played on top of guitars, while the wall of über high gain 7-strings guitars gives the song it's rhythmic coherence.


Lars Ulrich - not a big fan of him - used to put a lot of accents and fills, and interacted w/ the guitars a lot, but overall, there was a still a balance. The drums were busy, sometimes borderline, but it rarely compromised the song. And before him, Bill Ward used to do that too. But I guess the new generation had to top that and then add some.
