As for the dogs, the dogs themselves aren't always necessary.  Just putting a big bowl and large bone outside can be enough to add doubt to any would-be burgler.

A few "Beware of Dogs" signs wouldn't hurt either. Then add a couple of chains with one end attached to a pole and the other to an empty collar... and a motion triggered growling pooch sound bite recording (get it? "bite"?) placed under the porch, and your set. Saves you thousands in food bags and vet bills.

While we're dreaming, how about motion activated lasers paired with the sound of shot guns being loaded?

Or then maybe just try and domesticate those black widows that we have around here, instead of having them exterminated. A bag full of those could probably scare anyone away. I know it'd scare the heck out of me. :s
