  • New i7 -How to get X3ePE, Melodyne Ed2, AD2 and all to it

I recently bought an i7 4790k 4ghz w/Win 8.1, and though I am waiting for my extra HDD (2 -2Tb Seagates), I just started installing Sonar X3PE and am wondering how to get all the updated stuff (which is all on my laptop) "moved over". I've never moved Sonar nor any other plugs, VST's before. I always got the next version of Sonar to go on each new PC.
I've upgraded to Melodyne Ed2, AD2, and bought a bunch of ProChan, SD3, Dim Pro 1.5, Rapture, Z3ta2, expansions, and feel a tad overwhelmed by the task. The first thing you have to agree to is installing it on one computer at a time, so how does this work?
It seems ironic to me, that after almost 15 years of Cakewalk use, I never had to do this before.

The 2 new Seagates will be my Cake Projects, and Libraries drives. The OS -C drive is a WD 1Tb, so I figure I should be able to install some stuff and then move whatever (like the Dim Pro that is on disc 1 of the 4. I also have 14 volumes of DimPro stuff that will go on my library drive).
Help!
Thanks in advance.

I thought that Windows itself has a built-in utility to port software from one machine to another. I have never used it, but seem to recall seeing it a few times.

Thanks mettelus.
My wife also got an identical i7 and she's doing that (so when I get the cable I can try it out), migrating programs from her laptop to the new i7.  I will try that out tomorrow and report the results. She says it worked great for her stuff.
There must be an easy/efficient way to do it. I have a lot of stuff (it feels like it anyway) and my laptop libraries are on an external drive, so that should help some (though I think I'll use it for a library backup)

They can be on more than one PC, they allow it. Just did the same process myself. Just takes ages to do. AD2 and AKeys have to be re-downloaded, and that took over 24 hours with my download speed here.

Thanks for the warning, Scoot! LOL     I have M50's (love 'em) and the AD keys, too. I plan to get the complete AAS, too.

As I went to the CW site, I wondered if X3e is the same as the 3.1.1 Patch. I don't see where the "e" is, so maybe that's what they're calling it, now.

I should mention that I have the boxed version of X3PE, so I can install Dim Pro 1.5 and assume I can move the samples to the library drive later.

Interesting.  I did not know this.

I'm in same boat as OP having built a new i7.

I started installing some extra Rapture, and Z3ta2 stuff. The default location is C> program files > Cakewalk> then which ever folder.
I am wondering if I can move the samples from there to my library drive and if I should make it the "same" path
but, F> program files> Cakewalk> ____folder???

I also have to install my IK Sample Tank3 and the Total Studio Bundle 3 (which is all of ST2/synths, plus Miroslav)and what would be the best way to set up all these folders on my internal library drive.

I'd like to do it right/well/correct.
Help! LOL

The best way is using mklink with the /d or /j switch. The mklink command with /d or /j switch can be used to relocate just about anything. The actual name directory containing the samples does not matter. For example to relocate the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" folder to "F:\my sample folder\my Rapture samples" perform the following steps:
1) Using Windows Explorer move "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" to "F:\my sample folder\my Rapture samples"
2) run cmd.exe as administrator and issue the following command at the c: prompt
mklink /j "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" "F:\my sample folder\my Rapture samples"

I prefer to keep some of the directory structure similar to the C: drive so in my case I use S:\Cakewalk\Rapture\Mulitsamples as the actual location of my Rapture samples, S:\Cakewalk\DimPro\Multisamples for DimPro etc. Because, my sample drive contains samples from other vendors, the top folder is the vendor, Cakewalk, FXpansion, iZotope, Toontrack, etc. Then the second level is the application Rapture, DimPro, BFD Eco, Iris, Superior, etc. The lower levels correspond to the original folder layouts. This made it easy to move and link the original folders while retaining some notion of where the data came from when looking at the sample drive.

Thanks Steve. I do have my laptop's external library drive set up with separate vendor folders and figured that was basic organization, folder-wise.
Are you saying you have the application on your sample drive? I assume that, say Rapture is on C, but its samples can be on my library drive. Is that necessarily true?

I am moving them in step 1 and then redirecting "Rapture" where to find them?

I don't think I've ever run a cmd.exe or c: prompt, so that is a little intimidating.
I appreciate you walking me through this!

All my programs are on the C drive. My sample drive mostly contains samples (although for Rapture and other sfz synths, the sfz files are stored with the samples). In the case of Rapture, only the Multisample folder is relocated.

I physically moved "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" to "S:\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" by right-clicking the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" folder and dragging it to "S:\Cakewalk\Rapture" and selecting move from the context menu.

Then running cmd.exe as administrator issued the command
mklink /j "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples" "S:\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples"
This creates a directory junction called Multisamples in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture" pointing to "S:\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples."

To Rapture the samples have not moved, the program still loads them from "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples", however; the OS actually reads the samples from "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Rapture\Multisamples."
