Hi all, back on the forum after a 3 year lapse. Using Sonar 8.53 and XP pro 64 bit, should I disable file indexing on my audio and sample drives? I use the PC only for Sonar. I kind of figure Sonar knows where to find it's own audio etc and doesn't benefit from indexing .Whats the scoop?

IIRC (when I used XP), one of the recommended tweaks was to disable Indexing as it freed up some RAM. Hopefully, someone can confirm this........but, after getting on Win 8.1 x64, with plenty of RAM in hand, I don't do any tweaks in Windows (except disabling Windows sounds & WiFi.)

Indexer can be a very useful tool, but it needs to be configured properly (i.e. the "files types" to be indexed and not indexed need to be manually configured which can take some time). Upside, is you can use the search field in the Windows Button popup quickly if this is done.

The downsides to the indexer is it is a process, and can begin running in the background at the least opportune moments. Also, you should not keep an index file resident on a SSD (it should go on magnetic media).

I personally have mine disabled, since I know where most files are, and if I do need to search I can often get close enough that I do not have to search an entire drive. The index file also was a lot larger than I expected and its use was limited for me.

ok I'll give it a try, I've done most of the published tweaks but get some mystery dropouts that don't seem to be improved by the common workarounds, and that don't seem to be caused by 50 tracks and tons of plugs (ha)

If you think the indexing service itself is causing your glitches, then excluding locations from the index is not the best test or solution. You should disable the service itself from running, otherwise it will still be working on locations that you have not excluded, and using resources.

Using windows 8.1.1.

All drives indexed.  I search for lots of stuff. I have the indexer set to include internal bits. I have needed to find sonar project files that have particular words in track titles.

The indexer supposedly only works during pauses.

I have and will continue the "Search for the Holy Tweaks" ::  stop all auto updates, disable all MS computer testing and phoning home results, auto defrag, disable sharing network,....
