Well I say eliminate the nut and check the fret crowns to eliminate those from being
a possible reason.....they'll effect any string.

I got the dial indicator.

It made me see that those strings and that nut are never going to work.

I'm going to go back to set of strings that are suitable to the nut and re-evaluate.

Thanks so much for the advice.

If I decide to go with a fresh nut I'll have to slot (pardon the pun) into my "to-do" list and wait til it comes up. :-)
