Ok, I know i've got an old tablet.  A viewsonic (curses here) G-tablet.  2.2 whatever.  I go to download touchdaw.  It sends me to a site that needs to download an app to download any program.  I sign up and ... nothing.  It sends me to goggle play or something.  Nothingdownloads.  It thinks my tablet is a phone.  It wants me to input (from a different screen on the tab) my model # and info my tablet doesn't show.  I mean, I just spent 2 hours going around in circles and probably pissing off my facebook friends so that is the only way I could find to log into the android store.
 
So, am I stupid?  Do I need to drop hundreds more on a tablet that won't work? Why?
 
How does Google/Android hope to make money when I can't download programs from their controlled site?
 
A pox on Android, google and Viewsonic.  It is almost enough to turn one to Apple.  At least they try to keep the customer happy.  Amazon works fine for downloading a book on the wife's Ipad we bought.  It took all of three minutes.  Maybe I'll try the iPad.

well my Androi based phone(ATT avail z90 something or other) wont download a lot of "andriod" apps, and I cannot update the OS.

My Ipad, OTOH, is a gracious host and downoads and runs almost everything.I just installed a SetList App that sends midi program changes to my live keyboard rig, and has boxes for notes,lyrics, chords, etc all for $3.99.

No , your not stupid. When you purchased your tablet is was state of the art for what I was capable of doing.

if google play is an issue I am sure if you check around you can find the .apk and simply load it

the answer isnt an iPad however unless you want to sell your soul into the Apple ecosystem and have a device that wont work with any other tech stuff in the house.. i have an ipad and it sulks in the corner while everything else talks to each other over DLNA.. worst $500 i ever spent

It is actually quite ironic, the Apple thing.  They got their start contra MS being "professional", at least in music/video (tho I guess they were also marketed as "friendly").

Today, their strength is in consumer-friendly products and ganging them all together.  Like the iPad and my wife's iPhone via the "cloud" (my, what an amorphous term that one is).  She had to buy more cloud storage because of all her photos/music.  But I am impressed about how smooth the iPad is, tho I don't want it to do much - read a book, browse imbd to figure out where I've seen that actor (or more likely, a cute actress) who is on the tv, light weight stuff like that.  We'll see how well it works if I try to control SONAR w/ it once other programs and bluetooth gets involved.

Android seems like an apple wanna be, but it is an ugly sister.  my phone works fine w/ android and does smart phone kind of things - appts. and mapping as well as, you know, making calls.  I know part of my problem is the fact my tablet is older w/ an older version OS.  Viewsonic dropped it once it didn't take off.  I need to write them a nasty letter about how if the tablet would have worked I'd have been happy to buy their android monitor combo - a large touchscreen that you can use w/ your computer too..

Basically , I'm too old to be learning a whole new way of doing things.  I think I lost my edge when MS went to vista.  I just want things to work but I want to put things where I want them - not where MS wants you to.  I would like to have all my SFZ files/samples in the same place because, you know, it might be fun to drop a Rapture sample into DimPro without going through mouse contortions and having to remember where the same kind of files must be stored (according to Rene) in order to keep MS happy.  It is pretty easy to remember X:/samples/sfz/cool sounds.  And I don't want to dig into the registry.  Just like my car, I can work on it, but I prefer not to.  And I don't want to open the hood to switch gears.

I bought the stupid g-tab mostly to control SONAR - which it won't do after spending mucho days messing w/ it.  It won't even download the program.  I had hoped to use it in lieu of a laptop but it won't word process even tho I bought the programs to do that - it is large clunky type that doesn't even approach MS Word look or functionality. 

I guess I'm stuck waiting for a cheaper MS tab and a large touchscreen for music. So their evil plan worked to get me to spend more money, hope replacing experience.

at the risk (actually, certainty) of repeating myself... you do NOT need to download the program via a portal (google play, amazon etc).. though there are plenty of portals that do not do device verification.
You can search and find the apk using your pc, put into memory using the USB cord or  email it to yourself, put it into storage on the tablet then install from there...there are apps that will install apps from memory... this is how folks with kindle fire get all the google apps on the tablet...its not hard.

but if you would prefer to go spend the $500 on an iPad, go ahead!..lol

I had the same problem, Alan.  I bought a Coby Kyros Android ICS and Play would not recognize it at all.  I was told I had to "root" it in order to get Play to recognize it.  and of course if Play doesn't recognize your device you can't download anything!

and I never could get it to "root" either - even though I tried several times with diffeent methods.

so I finally gave up - gave in and bought an iPad.  'cept I spent more than $500 on it...I got the 64G gen 4 with cell carrier - brand new.

and even though I have NEVER been an apple person, I LOVE this iPad!  it just works.

Yea, mystic, that is the problem.  I learned DOS enough to make it work.  I learned Windows.  Windows got pretty easy.  Now that I'm an old fart Android comes along and it is basically back to DOS.  And I don't know anyone who knows android - maybe I need to find a better class of younger people, but none of my kid's friends were into Android.  It was all iPad. 

Wish you were here but I might look into it some more.  Interesting - using email.  And the reason I went with Android was because it had USB.  I might PM you once I get this new phone whipped into shape.

But don't worry - I'm not spending any more money on apple or android.  "We" bought an iPad this Christmas, me and the wife.  She, of course, uses it mostly, but I have some rights to it. ;-)

I just bought a tablet.  It ended up being an iPad because I needed it in a hurry for a trip, but I would have gone with a Google 10" Nexus if I could have gotten it in time.
 
I mostly love the iPad.  This display is absolutely stunning and it mostly works in a very intuitive fashion.
 
But then there's iTunes.  What a steaming pile!!!!  I hate this software more than any thing else I've ever encountered (at least in the category of mainstream stuff that is widely used and should just plain work in a completely obvious way).
 
But it's great having a tablet.  It's cool to surf the web from the comfort of my living room couch.  I was originally just going to buy an e-reader like a Kindle.  But I took a look at what I wanted to read on it and the list included a lot of huge PDF manuals, so the 10" screen became an issue.  But for PDFs, the 10" table is brilliant!  Ever checked out how big a pile of printed documentation there is for Kontakt, Reaktor and SONAR?  I've got all that and more on my iPad.  It's marvelous and I'm finding the time and energy to read this stuff now that it doesn't involve a massive, unweildy binder to cart from room to room.  Highly recommended for documentation addicts like myself.
 
 
Edit: While we're on the subject, does anyone have experience using your tablet as a SONAR control surface?  I thought I read where there's a fairly inexpensive app that can be used with a variety of DAWs.

TouchDaw on Android.  That is what started the thread.  I couldn't get android pit to download it to my old tab.  Mystic needs to write us a tutorial ;-)

Or you, once you get it done on the pad. 
 
I do have touchdaw on my old android phone.  It looks pretty cool and customizable.

find and download the touchdaw apk.. a google search for "touchdaw apk" should find you a source... if you have a download folder in the tablet, put it there via usb, or if you cannot do taht, email it, then download the attachment.

look in google play, or amazon for the app "easy installer".. this is an app that will install .apk files on your device... download and install this app.

open easy installer, it should find or you should be able to find your download folder and select the touchdaw apk.. and it will install it.

cant write any better instructions than this... its been months since i did this on my friends kindle fire...
