The question that comes to mind... does X1 have an option to clear picture cache file upon exit? Like Internet Explore does?  Would that be something to consider if it doesn't?

Edit - I'm powering up my notebook to check if that is an option... Found under configuration settings  - PicCacheMB set to 500 MB. Would changing this to a lower number impact performance?

So, bottom line is, I'm too chicken to uninstall anything.

Help..

That's how I get too :)

Doing some house keeping isn't a bad thing though. If you uninstall old versions and accidentally zap a plug in you use regularly, you can always get that back if you have the original disks. Just do a custom install, and only choose the plug in you want. The hardest part is knowing what plug in came from which version.

I only keep the two latest versions of Sonar installed at any given time, but I'm sure I have some old plugs in there (ie: timeworks)

I would absolutely dump and clean out every version of SONAR previous to 8.5.

I'm really surprised to see this advice posted without any caveats or details. It's well-established that uninstalling older versions of SONAR can take shared content with it that new versions are still using, even if you answer "no" to all the shared files prompts. I once did a successful uninstall of 8.0 to prove that an 8.5 install from download would continue working without it, but I had to back up all the Shared folders, and restore lost content after the uninstall to get everything back.

If you back up and restore the shared content, older versions can be safely uninstalled, but it's hardly worth the trouble for the small amount of disk space saved and the loss of access to older versions when you get errors opening or editing old projects in newer versions.

Also, it's necessary to manually remove registry branches and AppData content to really get things completely cleaned up, providing more opportunities for making costly mistakes.

IMO, it's just not worth the trouble and the risk unless maybe you're running an SSD with space at a premium.

Yes you do need to manually remove registry branches (less important) and definitely AppData content to get things completely cleaned up. Unless you're running a good sized system drive the amount of space in total can be significant.

I guess I don't see the risk the same as you, but perhaps I was a bit hasty in my response and could have offered some more explanation. Unless we're talking about going back to versions that perhaps included the TImeworks stuff I'm not really sure what's going to get removed that would mess anything up.

For instance I just had a system where I removed both 8.5 and 8.0 and didn't experience any problems with projects nor could I see any changes to any shared folders. The content in these folders generally stays the same from version to version. What did you find got ripped out? Either way, saying "no" should safeguard this and the worst case scenario is you install a particular plugin or element from the older DVD, which to me is cleaner than having so many version of SONAR on a particular computer.

It just seems to me that having 5 versions of SONAR on a system is just a bit messy. No harm done in doing so, but I personally wouldn't do it. I'll keep maybe one older version, but that's my cutoff.

I seem to remember some posts of problems removing 8.0 and leaving 8.5. Things 8.5 needed were tied to 8.0.
Or maybe it was 8.3 instead of 8.5.

You can set the maximum size of the picture cache. Once this is reached, the oldest files are deleted to make way for the new. There's a setting in the AUD.INI file called PicCacheMB that sets the maximum. I think the default is 500MB. This can be changed in Preferences/Audio/Configuration File in SPlat. From memory this setting has been around quite a while so should apply to older versions of Sonar (although the way to change it might be slightly different).

Cheers, Peter.

Just thought I would mention that while the subject of the thread is certainly valid - the thread is from 2011, until the last couple of posts.
