  • sonar x1- converting stereo track to two mono tracks

hello:

i am trying to convert a single stereo track into two separate mono tracks and cant seem to make this happen. from the track view i have tried:
  • clips -> convert to mono (merges l/r of the stereo track into the same track as a single mon clip)
  • clips -> bounce to clips (doesnt appear to make any real change, the track is left as a stereo track with the same l/r panned audio)
  • tracks -> bounce to tracks (a new, single mono track is created containing the stereo l/r summed)
    • source/buses- traget stereo track
    • mix enables- all checked
    • source category- tracks
    • channel format- split mono
Help!?!?!

Thanks in advance,
JS

    • channel format- split mono...

There ya go, that's the one JS - split mono.  Try it.  Do believe you'll get what you want.

thanks- but that one doesnt work properly either. in that case a new, single mono track is created beneath the original stereo track containing the stereo l/r summed.

Hmm.  Your reply made me open up X1 to run a test.  I imported a stereo track.  I then bounced it, choosing Tracks as a source, and asking for split mono.  I got two mono tracks, L and R channels split.  They showed up at the bottom of the track list in Track View, not underneath the original stereo track.  Must be something incorrect in your procedure there.

thanks for hanging in with me on this. i have taken screenshots of before, dialog box and after performing this procedure. please take a look and see if this is the same as you found in your test.

Hi!

It should work the way rbowser described. Save and close the project, then try it in a new project. Sometimes a project can get a bit corrupted.

To get the job done if the split mono bounce doesn't work, then create two sends one panned 100% left and another 100% right to two new mono busses.

I haven't used Sonar in a while, you'll need to bounce each buss to make a permanent copy of each wave form, then drag them into two new mono tracks. I have forgotten how this is done from Busses. It might be a mixdown of each buss. Perhaps solo each buss then mix down the selected bus.

Now listen to some one else...

I tried.

Is this a track you've recorded in Sonar, or something you're importing? If the latter, there's a check box for "split to mono" in the import dialog.

yes, it should work exactly like rbowser described.  and I just tried it to verify that it works here.  I'm not sure why you're getting what you're getting.  I would suggest creating a NEW audio track, copy the wave form directly from the current track into the new track and try splitting the new track.

all:

thanks very much for your help. good news and bad news.

the bad news is that i am still having this issue. ive tried to convert using these steps and havent had any luck. even trying these with a new track doesnt seem to help.

the good news is that the import as mono that john t suggested works for exactly what im doing.

i plan to chat with the folks at cakewalk (to figure out what im doing wrong) but i can finish up my project with this workaround.

thanks again!
