A stereo track compression test.

what to listen for when Using / Testing a compressor is
:  ( put sonar into a loop in a song somewhere.)

use a song that has definition and not to mutch sound going on. " you need to be able to hear details "
Rip a song of a CD if needed for the test, and import it into sonar.

1. Coloring !
How do the compressor sound when it is active, but not compressing and threshold is 0 !
do it sound Clean, or do it add some Eq / character anywhere in the frequency spectrum ?
Do it dull the sound, like it's a thin blanket over the speaker.
Activate / deaktivate the plugin and really listen carefully many times

2. Light compression
Set up the compressor basic :  ratio 4:1 / attack around 8-12ms / release around 125ms, and adjust the threshold

so it compress 2-3 db, adjust output gain so it has the same lvl on or off
*Activate / deactivate the Compressor on and off several times from the FX bin not the plugin itself
notice the way it compress the signal soft or hard and do it open up and enhance the sound !
or make it worse ( sounding more Mono- 'ish ) / dull
Example : a low guitar / piano or whatever becomes more present
and more overall balanced in lvl together with the other instruments
do you hear more definition or room effect like adding a tad of reverb
( that is a good sign ), is there anything else you notice !

3. Fairly hard Compression
Almost the same as step 2, only difference is, adjust the threshold so it compress 6-8 db

do the same procedure as in step 2 from : *Activate / deactivate the Compressor

That is my basic quick compressor test.
Test the next compressor, take notes if you need, or do a mix-down, and use the compressor name on the file

I do step 1.
always with all plugins like EQ / compressor / limiter or any other FX plugin
if they'r not good there, trashcan is next step . .

If you see edited, on all post's, it is just cause i changed the size of the text on the post's.

Thanks for the tip on checking coloring first. I seem to be spending ages deciding which of the many free compressors I've downloaded suit which track. I'm a newbie to mixing (tried it 20 years ago)
