• SONAR
  • Outstanding Issues as of X3E (UNOFFICIAL) (p.9)

Well 4 months since X3E there seems to be no confirmation of a X3F, so I am left assuming it will never happen and we will need to pay for X4 to clear these (mostly historical) issues that have gone on for years.

I expect these sort of responses from the Sonar community:
1) "The bugs are trivial," Anybody who says they are all trivial has not gone into depth reading them (please see post #1).
2) "It does not effect me" which is basically ignoring other people who are effected.
3) "All software has bugs". This is completely true, however most of these aren't the sort of bugs to sweep under the carpet.
4) "Sonar is perfectly stable". That is exactly right but read #1 for outstanding issues..
5) "I am happy with X3E". Yes so am I, Cakewalk has done a brilliant job so far. But it ain't over.

I was hoping money in the Gibson pockets would clear this. Or maybe I'm just on my 112 day cycle today... It would be nice to have that confirmed as to what is happening about this anyway, one way or another (to quote Blonde).

Cheers...

6) This is simply what Cakewalk has to do in order to continue their software development cycle.

They've gotta move on at some point, so at least they have released a stable version (for most) in X3e.  Include a few issues from the list in an X3f and someone will just find a few more that really need to be included in another update.   It's a never ending cycle, a black hole, cats and dogs living together...

I think you are mainly referring to my 3rd point, yes all software will have bugs. But if we were to always think like that then no bugs are worth fixing. The bug reporting in the forums has slowed down dramatically since April. After an X3F (assuming most fixes listed here would be fixed) I would be surprised if there were many more serious issues.

What we have hanging around here is a backlog of (mainly) really old bugs. Sonar X3 was released 9 months ago. X3E resolved around 70 bugs which is about as many as we have outstanding in this list (of course not all bugs are the same). It's time they were gone.

Many of the bugs of the X3E list were present in X3D (around 15 bugs were fixed in the X3D list). An X3F that has eyeballs on this list I would assume is perfectly feasible, however I would not expect bugs to be fixed that don't need fixing in X4 (i.e. new functionality replacing old functionality), that would be a waste of time for their developers.

I think it's vital to kill them off before X4 introduces new bugs otherwise yes it will go on forever and reputation will diminish.

I guess I just look at differently.  To say that X3e resolved 70 bugs and that an X3f could/should do the same just isn't that simple in my view.  I could ask why the 70 or so bugs that X3e resolved were chosen... why those and not others?   There were obviously reasons, but since none of us are on "the inside" we're not going to have those answers.  I also have no expectations that the remainder of the list on this one forum thread is what CW is actually working with.  It's a good list, for sure, and it's taken some effort to compile.  But where these bugs fit in with their plans and schedules (if they even do) is an unknown.   I look at it as more of a benefit for users, and for that I think it works well.

Anyhow...  The next version will be what it is, and no amount of discussion here is likely to change that.   If it's X4 then I'm good with that based on my own experience with X3e.   If it's X3f then I'm good with that too.   Maybe I'm just too easy.    Nah... I just don't stress over this stuff.

I think I covered that by saying 'of course not all bugs are the same' when I was stating figures. I have no issues with the bugs they fixed in X3E, I'm sure they handled priorities entirely correctly. I was just looking at stats in response to your previous post.

Regardless it's undeniable that there is still a backlog to fix (out of years of neglect which I currently do not blame Cake for, they have been very proactive in trying to turn this around). My question to Cake is will there be an X3F to sort this out or not. Or will X4 (or even X4d) resolve most of this.

I stress out over this stuff because how X3 gets wrapped up will directly influence any X4 purchasing decision I make.

Cheers :)

I wish I were able to use X3e, but the bugs I posted here unfortunately are show stoppers and are confirmed by Cakewalk Tech support. There are certainly some serious bugs to warrant an X3f, as Cake AlexS has suggested..

This is the first month where there have been no further reproducable bugs reported at least in these forums. I dare not say that we have recorded them all (as we certainly haven't) but it 'feels' like we have as it's been slowing down since May. Regardless the slowdown is welcome.

Full details of what we still need fixes for are hanging around in the first post of this thread.

Cheers..

Agreed. Don't know why so many people seem to be so excited about X4 (for which they would have to pay) instead of expecting a free fix for these unresolved issues. X3f should indeed be the next "upgrade".

Well for me I'm in the middle. I know what is right and what is realistic. Nothing stops me making music with X3E but when most of that stuff is fixed there would be nothing to complain about.
