This is probably somewhat OT, sorry. I'm thinking of getting x3. But, if I get x3 I will probably think why, why did I not get x4. I mean it's x4 instead of x3, that probably means I should have waited until x4 came out. But, if there are some critical bugs still in x4 will it ruin the experience? X3 probably does not have many bugs that would make things hard. So what should I do? I cannot win. Now that I started using my Roland Duo-Capture I have experienced almost none crashes or freezings. I am kind of content. But there is a feeling in my head that if I upgrade I will make better music or that it will at least sound better. I do not know what I should do. I need a sign!!!

For a sign, look at the balance in your checking account.

But seriously--first things first. Download the X3 demo version. If X4 comes out within 30 days, you'll have been able to use X3 AND jump immediately to X4. If it doesn't come out in 30 days, you'll know enough about X3 to make an informed decision about whether you want it or not (I suspect you will).

Then if X4 comes out shortly thereafter, you can take advantage of the grace period for upgrades. If not, you'll have had the opportunity to use X3 until it does.

Stop talking sense, Craig, there's no room for that in this thread!

@kakku, I think the standard that was set with X3's initial stability and bug fixes has set many people's expectations for X4. X3 has proven itself, so is not a bad investment... You know what you are getting and what it does. X4 is still a "mystery."

If you have waited this long I would wait a little longer. Though all the advice above is thoughtful and sound.

Thank you guys for the tips. I think I will wait until x4 comes and then rethink the whole upgrade thing.

What you decide about when to upgrade DO NOT uninstall any of the previous versions.

My journey from 8.5 to X3 has been unhappy.
Have had to clone all tracks in projects to get drag/drop icons to work, to get tracks to follow bus colors.
Had to create new buses to get audio to work,...

X3 loses audio when I open IE, even to use the help file;;;; very strange.  8.5 does not.
No doubt related to my "pumpkin" of an audio interface.

I purchased X1, and X2, but could not get past the interface annoyances.  Have been trying to use X3 primarily because of the track colors to organize big projects, and am interested melodyne MIDI functions.

I will purchase X? when it is available, hoping that just like Windows 10 will have a bit more of the W7 UI intelligence, X? will have a bit more of the 8.5 reasonableness. (IE: user configurable 1-click buttons bars, fewer menus,.................................)

I am happy that it appears the Gibson Overlords are more supportive. The constant attention of THE CRAIG is a way wonderful benefit.

Praise be to THE CRAIG.

I think the best business sense would be to release a product when it's ready.

Now that's a quote!!! :)

THAT is when Sonar X4 will be released!

Get X3.  It is great and stable.  Who knows when a stable version of X4 will exist.   If I had to bet, I would think a lot of the skills used for X3 will translate to X4, so that will make your transition smoother.  The prices for upgrades, even outside grace period are very reasonable IMHO.
