IF lifetime membership meant core functionality (aux tracks, fixes, etc.) but NO add-ons (Vocal Sync, Drum Replacer, etc.) unless you bought them individually as needed, I'd probably be more inclined to stick with the current annual renewal model. Although I don't use all of those bundled features day-in and day-out, they're still nice to have. And depending on how much those would cost on their own ($99? $149? More?) things could get real expensive, real quick.

This is exactly why I don't believe they won't also change the regular monthly/yearly subscriptions to the core functionality and stop providing extras. Otherwise you're leaving your customers a lot of guessing work whether they are better off with a lifetime or monthly/yearly subscription. Plus, they would also piss off a lot of customers that are now jumping on the Lifetime deal, and then afterwards realize they are missing out on whatever extras Cakewalk would throw in the regular subscriptions. I really don't see that happening.
So my guess is that after June 1 (or maybe even on) they will also significantly lower the monthly price.

However only good things have happened since the Gibson takeover so I'm not worried.  It feels like a forward looking company union in ever way, or at least that's how it seems to the outside world.

It's no secret Cakewalk was not in good shape when Gibson took over. Gibson is committed to Cakewalk for many reasons, but it doesn't hurt that Henry Juszkiewicz is a long-time user of Cakewalk software. Few CEOs have that deep an understanding of a product and company being acquired, and he really wants Cakewalk to thrive.

No email for me (and not in my spam folder either).  I have always received these in the past; and I renewed back in January (through 3rd party).  I hope my name has not been dropped from the email lists.  Will be looking to see if one comes with the next batch.

Is there any disadvantage on waiting until June 1st to decide?

I'm starting to feel like Mac support IS the only logical explanation for the drawn out announcement and the intro of lifetime upgrades. Think about it... Cakewalk is probably trying to lock in as many current SONAR users as possible. Once SONAR is available on OSX, it will be competing against Apple's Logic which only cost $200. This means that they will have to lower the price of SONAR significantly. Lowering the price that much would probably tick off many long-time SONAR users and essentially make the subscription-based model obsolete.

Fingers crossed that the Big June Announcement isn't gonna be that they're closing up shop!
