Oh, the only thing that puzzles me is that statement which said the renewal was only valid through December 25, 2037. Does that mean that they expect us all to be dead in 21 years or that is how long they expect to be in business? Till death do us part!!!

That's when the world ends, no?

The lifetime option is very inexpensive and a no brainer (for me). However, why purchase it now? Isn't the offer good for awhile? That is, what do you get now that you won't get later? Am I missing something?

Thanks

Nope, not missing a thing. You can buy whenever you want up to August 31st

I still don't have an email Baps - I guess I'll be off to the Hamster Groomers Forum - they like me over there.....

You got it now.

Got it and paid - thanks Andrew - you're a superstar

And I am what, chopped liver?

3)  Plat is about $500 to start (i.e you bought one of the top of the line previous Sonar versions in that price range)
+ $150 upgrade to Plat + $100 renewal $100 lfetime

Thats $850 if you bought X3 Producer about 2 years ago.  That is quite expensive, IMO.  Seriously something to think about.

I started with Sonar 5 Producer, and have renewed at the top tier level consistently since then (including the short-lived Expanded version). I could go and add up everything I've spend on CW since then but I'm too lazy; in any case it's well over a thousand shekels, likely closer to 2. Is that a lot of money? Yes it is (and others have been around longer and spent more). But I've had access to an excellent cutting-edge DAW that does what I need it to and is a pleasure to use, for that whole time, and I've made quite a bit more than that doing the work I've done with it over the same period. So it seems like a fairly solid investment to me! Others' mileage may vary (some people don't make a dime from what they use Sonar for and are still perfectly happy with the deal) - it's really up to you whether you feel it's worth it to you, or whether you should look elsewhere if a competitor's offerings seem better or better value.

And the details are still unclear to a degree.  What are "core features?"  I have a feeling quite a few will disagree over what features are core.

That is surely so, but it doesn't matter a fig what anyone else thinks, since it's CW's company and product and they get to decide what is 'core' and what is 'extra'. We only get to decide if their offer is a good fit for our particular needs and situation. We can speculate on what they might be up to, but there's not much we can do to force them to do one thing or another we might like them to do.

$99 for any owner of Plat might not be a horrific upgrade to a lifetime update program, but Fruity Loops seems to offer a similar model for free.  (and only $39) if you have an ancient version and want to upgrade to the lifetime update model.

See above; there are various reasons why I don't use FL, even though it might have been a good idea from a purely fiscal standpoint to have switched before now, or to do so now instead of taking CW up on the current offer. Others may have other reasons, and of course there are doubtless many happy FL users who have their own reasons for feeling like they've made the right choice.

Personally I'm very interested to see what CW have up their sleeves on June 1 - if as Andrew has said here, there are no plans to make substantial changes to the membership model per say, with separate updates for lifers versus monthly or yearly updaters, and they are going to continue building on Sonar as a complete, flagship, top tier DAW platform that can hold its own with any and all competition, then it's hard for me to see a reason to switch horses now just because they've made an offer that seems either a) too good to be true (according to most here), or b) not cheap enough and they should give us everything for free always (which someone always seems to feel the need to assert in these discussions)...

Platinum is pro level software, so the cost reflects that. I think most pros make enough over the course of a couple years to justify spending $35 a month (based on your figures) for their main tool. If not, there are lower-priced versions.

As to Logic Pro's $200 price tag, until Emagic was purchased by Apple (and subsidized by a company with $80 billion in cash reserves), IIRC Logic 5 was selling for $999 . That's much closer to the true value of the software.

And the details are still unclear to a degree.  What are "core features?"  I have a feeling quite a few will disagree over what features are core.

The CCC has a download for the "core" version and separate downloads for add-ons. The core download has what Cakewalk considers core features, so you can look to that for an indication of how things will be handled in the future.

To highlight Craig's point about Logic, Camel's Alchemy cost users hundreds of dollars with available sound sets. When Apple bought them out, they rolled it into Logic as a free add-in. Apple's motivation is to sell Mac's and they make their money there. Like crackerjacks prizes. The consumer cost of Logic has to be offset by the inflated cost of the dongle needed to run it on.

“... we've got full Console 1 integration coming. And thats not even part of the announcement :)”

That is incredibly exciting, prochannel C1 plugins? New vst3 plugins?

No new plugins are required. You simply insert Console 1 as a plugin anywhere in a channel (track or bus) and you will have bi-directional control of that channel via Console 1. It essentially works similar to a control surface where Console 1 can now control volume/pan/mute etc. And you can switch track or bus focus from Console 1 or SONAR and it will sync up. You can also use Console 1 in the prochannel as an FXChain plugin and it works the same way.

As usual I'm confused. I just spent $200 on my Platinum renewal in Feb. and now I have to pay another $200??

It seems that Cakewalk needs to generate a lump of cash on short notice. No emails here, just a sense of "WTF NOW". How will the rules change next month?

This takes me back to X1 and then X1 Producer and then X1 Producer plus. Just continuous change that feels like you guys just make it up as you go along. If you are going to change the rules just get on with it. Don't tease, don't release little bits of the big picture.

The last year has been great but I'm getting tired of Cakewalk showing up with their hands out asking if I've any change to spare.

Perhaps I'll get the memo one day and understand what everyone is so happy about. Right now, not so much.

This is exactly what I don't get.  The amount of money it seems that had to be shelled out to get to this point seems awfully steep.

Logic - a full DAW that I think most would put on the Platinum scale in terms of the package = $200
Fruity Loops = lifetime updates for FREE

Curious what the announcement will be, but a bit surprised by those happy to shell out so much money with so little detail, and don't get me wrong, there isn't another DAW I'd prefer to use.  But this lifetime updates announcement, the documentation looks like a Fruity Loops kind of model, but for a lot more money.

What I don't get is people reacting as though Cakewalk has a gun pointed at their heads saying "YOU MUST PAY THIS OR ELSE"

For a one-off fee we now have the CHOICE to receive lifetime membership & updates. How can this be anything other than a great deal for existing members?

If you think it's too much then your decision is simple - DON'T PAY IT!

And you have until August 31st to make your decision.

+1
