My go-to favorite is the MJUC. The 3 in 1 approach makes this a good choice for just about anything I throw at it. Lush sound with "cclarity" or clean neutral compression. Regardless of price - I would recommend.

Currently, my most used compressor is part of the Waves SSL channel strip. I also use the CA-2A quite a bit to tame peaky tracks. Waves H-Comp gets used a lot on buses.

I use Waves Renaissance compressor the most.

i also use Waves L1 on tracks and busses, but usually only just kissing the meter,
sometimes i'll bury the meter on bass tracks, depends on the dynamics of the song.

i also like Waves C1, i use that across the master buss and mix into it...

i use compressors wherever i want to control level.

across drum busses, guitar busses, individual vocal tracks, bass tracks, percussion.....
you really don't know where you need them,
until you have an active mix going.

if i could go 'faders up' on everything, and have it all sit pretty,
i'd never use compressors!

actually, i can do that now,
but it's not the sound i want.

I primarily use three dynamics processor (during mix):
  • 1176 - fast/aggressive compression
  • LA-2A - softer more transparent control of dynamics
  • SSL Bus Compressor - Drum subgroup

Suggested Compressors In Brief

Here's a summary of the classic compressors Mike's research found to be most widely used by name producers. Read the main text for full details of what these units offer.
