If Apple were to purchase SONAR, they'd probably adapt it so it would become MAC only. They are only able to continue to explore musicians, video makers, and artists in general by offering mac-only softwares. This way, consumers become obliged to overpay whatever price Apple sets on their hardware. When Apple purchased Logic, it was a windows software as well, they changed it in a matter of months.

Back when Apple bought Emagic (Logic) it was known even before the sale was finalized that Apple would be ending the Windows version. That was their plan all along, to purchase Logic and make it Mac-only.

And it doesn't make sense for Apple to purchase Sonar. They already have a professional DAW and it doesn't make sense for them to purchase a Windows-focused software company. Apple is essentially a hardware company and is all about their "i" products - that's where the great bulk of their profits are coming from. Logic, as good as it is, is not a major bread-winner for Apple, and they seem to be getting more benefit from owning the IP for Logic (which is where Garageband - ported for both macOS and their iPad hardware - came from).

How about either selling or open sourcing Sonar?  There's obviously a user community, even it Gibson doesn't recognize it.

Also been with CW products for years. Was suspecting something wrong after they offered lifetime upgrades after having had a monthly subscription.

If not selling off why not release the code as open source, maybe someone can keep it compiled for new operating systems.

Well- this bit of news solved a problem for me- whether to buy a new copy of a Cakewalk product as I get back into recording, or buy something else.  :-(

For me as an occasional user, Sonar was very straightforward to learn vs. other brands I am evaluating now.  Definitely a loss there, and this move does nothing good for the Gibson brand.  As a semi-retired software company exec, if I had the cash laying around I would investigate the possibility of purchasing and taking it forward.  I don't.  Alas, timing is everything.

Right, I'll dump Sonar because you said so? Better yet. Let folks decide for themselves. Let them see what options they have, like just continuing to run it forever.

all i can say is that i am blown away. i also went for the "lifetime updates" a while back and now feel like i was totally scammed. this kind of news is known for some time before it actually happens folks....I am really sorry for all of the developers that really put together a fantastic product over the years. You have done amazing work and I wish you all the best.

I am going to take PreSonus up on the cross grade...

What is the point of dumping SONAR? That would mean I have to spend real money to acquire the same features I already have available now.

Certainly there is nearly zero likelihood that Cakewalk will ever be a product again and expecting anyone to save it is silly, but that is not a reasonable cause to stop using something that works.

If you are so keen on dumping and running why are you still here in the forums, anyway?

I wish there were some way to get the latest update. My subscription ran out before they did all the MIDI upgrades.

What about Magix? They bought the Sony stuff: Vegas, Sound Forge, etc.
