Is it really so that there's no plans to keep Sonar alive somehow? No one's interested in buying it? This is a huge loss :/

now not a time to be buying up companies.. it's not the cost of buying it.. but the dev + support costs. if I was buying it, I'd not want to be paying for existing customers tbh.

or someone would buy it highly cut down price.. take the source code they want , for their own project.. then resell it..

it's hard to judge the true value of cakewalk etc.

Has anybody had any luck contacting Cakewalk in regards to refunds? I bought Professional back in May and I'm somewhat salty that the year of updates turned out to be 6 months.

I did. This is what I wrote:

"I just read your anouncement about ceasing development of Cakewalk Sonar and I can't help but I feel ripped off. I bought the yearly subscription on 2/6/2016, which would have bought me updates until February 2017, but I bought lifetime subscriptions 6/9/2016 for the same price of an yearly subscription - just to find out now that I got only eight more months of subscription than I already paid for. How will you ensure I still can use my bought products in the future if I need to transfer them to a new PC? Is there going to be a refound for the missning 4 months of updates? "

And this was their response:
"My apologies for the delays and any headaches. Our activation, download and authorization services will remain up indefinitely so that you can continue download and installing SONAR on your future computers.
I'm not able to refund purchases past 90 days however I can set you up with some ProChannel modules that you can find in your account now. They don't all installed with Command Center so some of the installers you will need to grab from our site.
Thank you for all your support over the years and keep making music!"

I got the ProChannel PC4K S-Type Channel Compressor, the ProChannel PC4K S-Type Expander Gate and the ProChannel Concrete Limiter as an compensation.

Hope that helps

No development team left in the house. Buyer would get codebase and brand but not the valuable persons. I don't see anyone would buy such a complicated program without senior developers. :/

I think this time next year we'll see Gibson pulling its own plug.

Any company struggling to finance half-a-billion in debt is in serious trouble. Maybe the decision to kill Cakewalk was an easy way to write down a bunch of intellectual property that still has book value. Or they just killed it because it was easy.

Regardless, Gibson's next year isn't going to be easy.

This is the reason I don't have any - well, not much - malice against Gibson. They are simply a company in serious financial trouble and, for whatever reason, shuttering Cakewalk was better for the overall survival of the company than not shuttering it. They were not sitting in a meeting trying to figure out ways to piss off Cakewalk or Gibson customers. And as I've said before, if not for Gibson, we almost certainly would have lost Cakewalk years ago. Gibson wanted Cakewalk to succeed. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Not sure if this has already been discussed but Overloud are offering to set their plugs as included in sonar free with a revised serial number. Just applied for mine

I received my serial numbers yesterday. Way to go Overloud!

How do I go about doing that?

Get Cake to buy any part of Gibson that's profitable. That would be an answer!
Wait, it doesn't look like any part is profitable.....

(being facetious...bad, bad Joe) 😉

This is really sad news.  Sonar's been a godsend for me really, with it's monthly subscription payment option was the only way I could afford a decent DAW at the time.

I feel bad for the Cakewalk employees who've put their heart and soul into the products.

I also feel bad for those who purchased lifetime updates, who probably now feel just a little bit mugged off.

As for me?  Well, I guess it's time I save up to finally purchase Studio One as I was a DAW that's going to carry on being supported.  Frankly, there has to be some time when the servers get turned off, or authorisation on new machines is no longer possible.  And as someone who's been very happy with how Sonar has been working for me, and getting used to the workflow, that genuinely makes me more than a little sad.

So the $200 lifetime SCAM was just business as usual? Uh, no, sorry. They knew, they had to.
