The problem is going to be the next version of Windows.  When it does one of those sneaky forced updates, there will be no further development by Cakewalk, that's when things will begin to fall apart.

for those who are getting their software serials,
something I started 15 years ago... a text file on my desktop where I log in every serial number and registration code or whatever when I buy it.  If I sell or upgrade it then I delete it from the file. Then every few months I email it to myself so it's in uber-land...

I think someone jinxed Sonar by calling it SPLAT.

Will someone call ADOBE and get them to pick up this poor company.
Sure they could change the name to Audition II, but so what.
ADOBE! all the pieces are in place...

This is not going to happen.
Adobe already has Audition which fulfills their needs and SONAR does not fit at all in Creative Cloud catalog.
If SONAR went to Adobe: would Cakewalk users accept Adobe's subscription model? -No.

I would accept adobe's subscription model.  I use it now.  One does not get something for nothing.  Software and software upkeep costs money.  That is one of the lessons of this whole debacle.  If Sonar goes somewhere else - it is worth paying X$ a month to keep it maintained and keep the staff properly paid.

Is this a classic case of the Big Corporation agenda won out over the free-thinking smaller guy, I wonder?
Either way, the Bakers have made something special over the years - I thank you guys sincerely.

The lifetime of updates and add-ons all for a one off payment, should have raised the alarm. Gibson's offer was all smoke and mirrors - a desperate grab for cash by Gibson.
I have seen this topic all over music forums and have seen comments by both users and non-users all vowing not to buy another Gibson product. The owners of Gibson have signed their own corporate death warrant.

And they were selling 2018 passes (certainly on Steam, so I imagine directly as well) all up to the point they pulled the plug.  Quite despicable.

I'm one of those people.  Gibson is dead, whether they want it or not.

Very.
