Who owns rights to the code base?
Can't whoever that it is take it home and get re-going on it?

That's a good point.
Gibson owns the code base.  That's why this is especially effed.  They shelf it, it's dead.

I am shocked reading this announcement and still cannot believe it is not kind of 1 April joke...

Sonar has a really great potential to be main DAW at the market. POINT.

Just needed some work about polishing (bugs) and improvements to reach point when other DAW user would migrate to it...

It is at such level that decision to abandon cannot be concerned differently than - to be nice and polite for people - serious mistake...

So this is what is Gibson now... I think other companies which could ever consider to be sold would try to avod such buyer at all cost...

I feel very sorry for Cakewalk staff... But also I have no doubt they have plenty of offers from competitors whoa are now very thankful to Gibson to create opportunity to gain high skilled and experienced people... Knowledge is the biggest value. They will be pity of it...

It is unbelievable somebody could make decision to close such company which has so long tradition and history...

I'd love to see Noel, Lance and a few other Cakewalk Staffers start a new company building a DAW similar to Sonar.
Call it Radar and build it better than anything else out there.

I can't believe every innovations cakewalk ever made will be flushed into oblivion. Someone have to buy them.

Sonar should merge with Mixbus, both DAW strenght mixed together would make an incredible software. Call it Mixar, or Mixart... with a friggin dedicated Harrison controller! Would be epic!

I can't believe it. Been with Cakewalk since 2000. Bought the lifetime updates last year - kind of feel conned. i can only imagine what the people who paid in a week back must be feeling.
I'm really sorry for all you guys who worked on such a great DAW. You must be feeling awful. And just before X.mas!!!! Where's their friggiin' Christmas spirit??
Safe to say, I won't be buying a friggin' Gibson guitar any time ever! Serious bad publicity guys!

Hmmm. What I want to do is download all the installation files for SPLAT so I can reinstall it if need be. My DAW will become a non-internet machine, frozen in time so that no Windows update can kill it. Is there a way to access the program files?

Sounds like a great time to look deeper into Ableton.  Or FL Studio.

Imho those choices would be lower among the tiers if sonar replacements. Fine products but workflow for both is so different than sonar that it woukd be awkward. Even most people who use ( unless they are strictly hip-hop) these programs tend to use morw traditional DAWs too. FL and Ableton arw superior for beat making but clunky to the new user, particularly the acoustic musician, for mixing.

This is just devastating news. Cakewalk and SONAR have been so intertwined with my life for so long, it's hard to imagine. I met my wife on a Cakewalk business trip, eventually leading to a family with two beautiful children. I've spent countless hours in SONAR, filling proverbial buckets of creative blood sweat and tears, over the years. I'm sad for all the users (myself included) around the world that have made their musical homes in Cakewalk and SONAR over multiple decades - hell, since the last millennium. And I'm so deeply sorry for all my dear friends and former colleagues at the Bakery. The perception that the Cakewalk crew are talented, hardworking, earnest people who do this out of love as much as livelihood is exactly right. I can attest to that personally.

If SONAR could somehow get open sourced I'd happily contribute to the effort!
