Sounds like Gibson probably didn't have any business buying Cakewalk to begin with... :-(

Now I know why the bakers cheaped out on doing a Mac version. They knew the writing was on the wall well over a year ago so they just used cheap-assed translation s/w instead of doing real coding. I  really would have liked to have had a true Mac version but alas was never to be.

smart money for any maker is to NOT do it.. look at other things that were mac only before (digital performer).  most mac owners have logic or some version of it.

it's a bit like the episode of the simpsons where homer gets free reign to make a new car.. and bankrupts the guy.

Noel will tell you, the cost and dev support costs are the main thing with software..

so yer it's all good saying for a company to buy out a product.. but even a company with rolands resources it wasn't so great either.

I feel a need to chime in as well. Cakewalk has been my only real project to project working DAW for about 25 years. I still have and use midi archives from the late 80's - early 90's. I ported over from Texture and I'm amazed at the continuity of this software from the early days of commercial audio software. Noel you and the whole team have done great work and we all hope it gets passed on to a worthy owner. However things pan out - it's been a very nice ride and thank you.

I Hope Magix Software buy it out. They got Sound Forge and Vegas now. Bouth work great!

Magix is not a real company. They just buy already mature software, put a new version number on it, and market it as if there are actual developers behind it.

Moving to a new DAW is one thing.

But long term, am I right in assuming that we won't be able to take and use any 'built in' features - specifically the Pro-Channel modules - to another platform?

If there is no VST version available, is there any way to do this, or will they die inside Sonar when it eventually stops working on whatever version of Windows doesn't support it?

I bought fairly heavily into the Pro-Channel stuff, and I can't imagine a mix without the wonderful Concrete Limiter being in there.

Steve, I think we are asking a question along the same lines that is. The problem with having to migrate to another DAW from Sonar/Cakewalk software is that many of the VST/VSTI's  are hard coded to only work with Sonar/Cakewalk software. I was really liking the Adaptive Limiter VST that Cakewalk recently came out with, but it will only work in Sonar.

For those WHO PURCHASED the software should have that restriction removed at the very least IN MY OPINION because they PAID FOR IT'S USAGE and considering the update process.

Either way, Steve, these forums may fade away soon. I just wanted to say Thank you for all your helpful information over the years. I was a real A-Hole at time with an ego, I had no idea what I was doing in the realm of digital recording and playing music for that matter!

A lot of the helpful information that you said to me, while I didn't get it at the time, I get it now and the music I am making is beyond what I ever thought I could be capable of doing it all on my own. "Well, not my vocals", but I just wanted to say Thanks for taking the time you did and I hope that my works in the future make you proud because your knowledge teaching me how to record were a big part of all of it!!!!!

It means a lot!!!!!!!! I know I've had personal craziness in the past, but a lot of that had to do with the fact the my ex at the time was creating fake accounts to just talk BS at me and I could not trust anyone at the time, so I was a bit of an A-HOLE at time, I apologize to you and everyone else for those times. Those days are over thank god!

Either way, I just wanted to say Thank you! Your presence on these forums and your helpful information on how to record guitar have helped me more than you may ever know! Thank you for taking the TIME!

Say...
since they are shutting down, is there  any reason why CW wouldn't just update anyone who wanted it to the latest version before fading away? What's any potential harm in that?

Based on the timing of their "lifetime" subscription offer (a year before throwing in the towel), I'd say don't hold your breath.

I know that profanity and violent language are not permitted in this forum.
So I will just leave this here to express my thoughts today:

I really miss concrete when working outside of sonar.

Can we cakewalk users buy it? Can we bring that much money on the table?

Henry's price would be in the millions. What do you think?

I know. but we all have to pay at least $400 now. If we used that to buy out Cakewalk instead of buying a new DAW it could be possible if we get enough along!

Øyvind, I am afraid you missed something important... Let's say we all will be able to collect enough money to buy Cakewalk from Gibson... And what then? What about money needed to keep Sonar devel & support going?
