How much of a loss was it making anyway? Does anyone know? Any recommendations on moving to an alternate DAW, migration paths etc.?

It's like a death in the family!

No, it really isn't. Only someone who is emotionally r.e.t.a.r.d.e.d. would actually say or believe that. Reality check: A software product you've enjoyed using extensively over a long period of time will no longer be updated. Deal with it. Try googling: Grief counselors for discontinued computer applications re Opcode Vision et al

I do not find any other DAW that is able to do our job in digitizing thousends of tapes, vinyl ...
There are a lot of DAWs on the market - but not with the capacity of SONAR for our job.
I can hang myself.
It's no fun anymore to play on my Gibson guitars. It's no fun anymore to use a Stanton record player (Stanton = Gibson).

I suppose for digitizing you could take the entire system off the internet and just keep running the show? Or do you need to keep updating your software and OS?

Oh crap...

Just recording and mixing two albums right now on Sonar and I have to admit that I'm a little bit concerned if I can wrap them up before some plugins I'm using start to popup some errors, etc. I guess I just have to check out some options; Reaper, Cubase, something else?

I still enjoy playing my Gibson guitars, though. :/

Hey exit the lemming, check the acoustica pages. This weekend thru Tuesday, Mixcraft 8 Pro Studio is on sale for $99 (45% off SRP of $179). Please share with your SONAR friends. Thank you for the inquiry.

I just heard the news that Cakewalk’s Boston HQ offices have closed. My name is Anthony Conte (currently VP for the Mixcraft DAW), and I spent 19 years at Cakewalk, including 12 years as the Vice President of Sales. For decades I worked with many of the brilliant, incredibly talented folks that now find themselves out of a job.  My heart aches for the current Cakewalkers and the thousands of SONAR users across the globe. Simply put, this is the end of an era in the world of MIDI and Digital Audio recording.

While I do not know the fate of SONAR or what Gibson’s plans are for Cakewalk, I can assure all the current Cakewalkers that their future is bright. For the last six years, I have been lucky enough to have landed at a like-minded company, Acoustica, makers of Mixcraft 8, an award-winning DAW for the PC. Not coincidentally enough, Acoustica freakishly reminds me of the early days at Cakewalk. A small but growing music software company made up of great people who are passionate, innovative, hard-working, and who have all become my family. Acoustica is committed to making Mixcraft a DAW that SONAR users will want to seriously consider adopting. Thanks,Anthony

How about a 'vegetarian vulture' crossgrade deal Anthony?

LOL while you are correct ....the emotional impact is a result from the truth that for many of us old folks, it a software product we have enjoyed using extensively over a lifetime.  The fist commercially available PC based midi sequencer. Add this to the fact there are much better ways to announce/plan/communicate the discontinuation of software.  Many examples of how to effectively do this since as you alluded to ... this happens folks.  While sonar is no operating system.  I might have looked at how Microsoft deals with the end of life of operating systems.   I personally kind of questioned the verbiage of all the lifetime updates etc.  Aluminum siding companies for example are known to sell the 30 year and lifetime warranty pitch, while the companies routinely pack up and close only to open under new names.  Moving companies also routinely get horrible reviews and lawsuits and then just open under a new roof, only to repeat the same corporate graft. No offense to any siding or moving professionals.  I studied this kind of thing while getting post graduate degree in business and it interests me.
