My only issue with someone taking over Sonar is the licensing.  Over the years I spent more time using other DAWs. What I loved about Sonar is the authorization. They always had an "I trust you" attitude towards the end user.  I've always supported them based on this.  I have SPLAT installed on all of my systems. I doubt this flexible licensing would exist under Microsoft.  As with my Sony products they are on 2 machines.  When Magix decides to have a 2 machine authorization I will buy their licenses.

the trust model don't work, that simple.. sure makers expect you to maybe have a "funny" version for a year or 2, but they do expect you to say.. "i like doing this.. I'll buy into it"  . hence why DAW makers are so keen to go after students. sure you can do the "stack it high, sell it cheap" model reaper does, but that also affects dev costs.

if you had a a dev company, would you put it down to trust ? I wouldn't .. as I know we are in an era moreso than ever where people are "what, I have to pay for this ?"  . same with albums etc. and look at how low cost they are compared.

I'm not a fan of elicenser / ilok.. but I've got great software that I can only get by using them.. and I know that my payment is going to help devs.. not those wanting a free ride for 6+ years.

SONAR can do Projects with up to 400 GB of tapes and vinyl. Recordlength up to 80 hours.
And then splitting 80 hours of tapes into thousends of clips.

SONAR has a very fast handling to split thousends of clips and zoom them in and out with the mousewheel. Also it's very easy to apply the effects to the clips and mark them as "done".
I checked other DAWs the last years, they do this very slower and uncomfortable.
At the moment I try to check Studio One. But at the moment I don't see the possibility to render an effect to its own clip. Even scrolling through hours of audio is not so comfortable. Even zooming in Studio One is not so good, because you can not change the zoom-factor.

The next point is: We need to change 14 computers.

And even if I turn of internet SONAR needs to re-authorize after dynamik changing the IP-Adress in the network.

Have you looked at WaveLab? There's a trial version available.

Wow...First Malcolm Young then Mel Tillis, Charles Manson, David Cassidy, and now Sonar.
It's been a bad week all around.

R.I.P guys...except for you Charlie. Hope you rot in hell with Hitler and Bin Laden.

Wow!!! This is incredibly sad and shocking news. I been a Cakewalk user since the days of Professional Audio 8 and upgraded with each version of SONAR through the years. Although I bought Studio One 3 last year, this has always been my go to DAW. At least I know it's time to get up to speed on Studio One 3 as I am with SONAR but I'm still going to ride this software until the wheels fall off.

Who knows, maybe Softube will jump and buy Cakewalk since they have been integrating their hardware (Console 1) with SONAR.

WTH.......... Just when I feel comfortable using the Matrix and Theme Editor.. Gone and pull the rug...
Using Studio One at the same time.... but Sonar is where I have fun. Man, this is hard to deal with.

It would be SUPER sweet if Microsoft picked them up on the cheaps. This could really step up their "we're super creative" image.

Personally I doubt whether Gibson will still be around this time next year.

I own Wavelab Pro and Adobe Edition. Both are great editors, but their workflow is a lot slower then SONAR.
We know companies that make the same work. And they ask me how we can work so fast - because they work with ProTools, Samplitude, WaveLabe or Adobe.

At the moment I check Studio One. It has a great MacroEditor and a very good management to name clips. Splitting clips is very fast. But it is not possible to render an effect to a single clip. Only for the whole track. That is a problem. Because I need to render for example an equalizer with different settings to different clips. And normalisation is only possible to 0dB. That is also a problem.

Long time user - going back to a Cakewalk "studio" version that came with a Soundblaster sound card  and continuing today with Platinum with Lifetime Updates. (I got suckered too.)   It's been a while since I posted on this forum, but upon hearing the news, I am heartbroken.

I feel badly for the dedicated people who work for Cakewalk, and more importantly, my fellow Sonar users.  I feel anger towards Gibson, whose record of running good businesses into the ground, continues. If they treat their customers this way, I could only imagine how badly thy treat their employees.  While I do own a vintage Gibson Guitar, (Made in Kalamazoo), I will never buy from them again.

I have invested so much of my sweat and time into writing and recording music with Cakewalk software.  At the moment, it's unthinkable about migrating to something new.   I suspect, I probably disconnect my DAW from the Internet and use the program for as long as possible.

Hang in there everybody and keep making music!

The only reading that has been of interest ...in bold. Time will explain both to me.

Whatever is going on I wish the Cakewalk employees the best. I've had over a decade of benefitting from their talents and help when I needed it. They may want to reflect on when Gibson dumped on the folks in Michigan...they just starting making the guitars they use to make for Gibson. That worked out very good for them...there are bright sides.
