I am trying to use my guitar for recording in Sonar Platinum.

When I have the driver mode set to mme (32-bit) and choose Stereo Line (2-M-Audio Fast Track) as the input the program freezes up and does not recover.

When I set the drive mode to ASIO all the input and output drivers disappear.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I am using
Sonar Platinum Version 21
M-Audio Fast Track Pro
Windows 7 (64 bit)
Realtek High Definition Audio

Your subject says when you choose ASIO all outputs except the ASIO ones "disappear".

In the post you say selecting ASIO results in no audio inputs or outputs being present at all.

Those aren't describing quite the same thing. It would be helpful to know which is correct.

Have you installed the M-Audio ASIO driver for the interface or areyou using something like ASIO4ALL? If you are using ASIO4ALL then I suggest uninstalling it and installing the manufacturer's ASIO driver which is specifically written for the interface.

Something that might be happening is that while MME drivers allow you to run more than one interface at a time ASIO drivers do not. At least, not unless the interface manufacturer has specifically written the driver in a way that lets you use more than one of the manufacturer's interfaces at the same time. Most manufacturers don't write drivers that allow this, and the ones that do (such as RME) only allow more than one interface if they are made by the same manufacturer.

And you can't run an MME interface and an ASIO one at the same time in a DAW for lots of technical reasons.

So selecting ASIO as the driver model will not let you access MME drivers, and will almost certainly only let you use one M-Audio interface at a time.

Thanks for your help, tlw.

The first time I switched the ASIO, all the inputs except ASIO disappeared. So I switched back to MME and they all reappeared. The next time I switched to ASIO they all disappeared (including ASIO). Trying this a few times (switching to and fro ASIO/MME) the ASIO inputs/outputs never appear now when ASIO is selected. ALl the inputs/outputs appear when I select MME.

I have installed the drivers downloaded directly from the M-Audio site and not ASIO4ALL.

Ultimately I'm trying to record some guitar while I'm listening to the backing track I put together. Can ASIO output to speakers or once I get ASIO working do I just need to record the guitar part and then switch back to MME for the rest of my work/playback?

ASIO will only input/output to your audio IF so you will want to connect your speakers to you audio IF - you don't want to be switching back and forth. If you're recording guitar and want to monitor any fx in the box you'll want to use ASIO drivers.

you downloaded the drivers from here ?

Your not going to be able to stomach the latency that MME gives you. There is no way around it.
Install the Driver from Avid and select it in the Preferences>Devices>Input / Preferences>Devices>Output.
Like here:

Then under Preferences>Play back and recording, Choose ASIO under "Driver mode".

I am using
Sonar Platinum Version 21

No idea what version 21 is.
Open Command center to see what version you are running.

This is why you use ASIO when recording Audio in Sonar ( or any DAW) all other audio modes have not only higher latency, but they do not sync up as you overdub new tracks, This is a screen shot of a loop back test I did using the different driver modes. You can clearly see why you would never use MME mode.

When your working with Sonar you use only your audio interface for listening. There are controls on your front panel to blend the computers playback with your guitars input. Use those and headphones or studio monitors. You cannot use computers sound system when recording in Sonar ASIO.
