Comping Colors Problem?

In the new video on comping from Cakewalk, it shows someone using the comping tool. He gets nice color differences between the muted clips and the selected ones. Red and black I think. Read and write cache is not enabled. Why would I use it. Recommended memory size?

I noticed this in the preferences. At default it is not enabled and the size for each is 256. Why should/would I turn these on?..
