Having problem with getting Akai LPD8 to work with sonar X1

The Akai comes with it's own editor and it's plug n play, but can't seem to assign the pads to any specific note on the keyboard or any sounds. If I just open a midi track and a soft synth and assign the input to the LPD8/ omni, it will sound out, but only in a major scale format ( 8 Pads = 8 notes ..
