Want to use Matrix as a Pattern Style sequencer record/loop question!

I would like to use the Matrix view like an old pattern style sequencer. What is the best way to record/setup that I can use to achieve a smooth loop of the recorded elements within the Matrix cells..I would like to capture all recorded and non recorded elements within a track (including empty space..

Does anyone know if there's a way to get back the processing progress bar for the entire mix, instead of the separate instances it runs? I hate watching an indeterminate number of these go by and not a real progress of the how long it will take to render the whole mix...
