piano roll does not scroll

For reasons unknown, at times my piano roll does not scroll to keep up with the now time. The now time bar disappears to the right and I am left looking at old music. I thought I read somewhere that this is a "feature", but I can't find that again, and I can't figure out how to disable it or stop it..
