First core is peaking...other 5 at less than half load

Is there anything I can do about this, short of upgrading to Windows 8 (I hear the load is spread more evenly)? I'm getting to the point in this project where the first core is hitting the red sometimes, causing clicks and stutters. I know I can freeze some tracks, but I'm at a stage in the arrangem..
